Local Fly Fishing Information
The state of Arizona is a very well kept secret when it comes to trout fishing. We are home to over 500 miles of trout streams and 30 trout lakes. You also have the opportunity to fish for largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, and stripers on the fly. There is no “closed” season in Arizona so you can fish year round. This report will cover the most feasible and accessible waters.
In the spring the fish will be moving into the shallows to spawn. The best fishing of the year can take place during this time. Use sinking lines until the fish are actively surfacing. You will need a fast sinking depth charge line (150 or 200 grain), a slow sinking Intermediate line, and a floating line. In the summer, fish early mornings before the fish go deep. Try top water right up to the bank using a floating or slow sinking line. In the fall, the conditions will be similar to the spring with the water cooling down and more activity all day. The winter is the most challenging for the fly angler with the fish moving into deeper water. Go deep with a depth charge or type 5 sinking line.
Flies to use: baitfish patterns that resemble shad and crayfish patterns in sizes 2, 4, 6 (Silver Messy Minnow, White Clousers, Olive and White Clousers, Lefty’s Deceivers, Livebait Fly/Flexo Streamer, Gummy Minnow, Super Silver Sides, EP Fibers, Gulley Ultra Claw, Gulley Fish, Dahlberg Diver, Poppers in white, chartreuse and white, olive and white, and frog patterns). Use a 6 weight rod for the baitfish patterns, and an 8 wt is best for the big, bulky poppers.
