Start with a durable fly box that fits the flies you fish with most. Then set it up so you can grab the right pattern fast when the water (or the hatch) changes. Common ways anglers organize flies include:
Choose a fly box based on your flies and your carry method. If you want quick access and low bulk, a lightweight box with foam pages is a great fit. If you like more separation, go with a compartment-style box. And when you fish specialty rigs or oversized patterns, a purpose-built box (like a streamer or dropper-rig box) can save you from cramming flies into a box that’s not made for them.
Large saltwater flies and streamers do best in a box with more clearance and secure holding power. A large streamer box gives bulky flies room to ride without getting crushed.
Look for a fly box that matches the conditions you fish:
If you like something with a more classic feel, a wood fly box can be a great way to carry flies with a nod to tradition.
Orvis fishing fly boxes make it easy to keep flies dry between casts and find the right one when the hatch changes and you’ve got one shot to cast to your target. We choose these fly boxes to organize our freshwater and saltwater flies and protect them on the move. Go with a larger, double-sided box for streamers and big baitfish patterns, or carry a compact pocket box for dries and nymphs. Many styles have multiple sleeves, so you can bring a mix of patterns without extra bulk. Choose rugged double-sided foam for everyday use, or elegant wood when you want something special. Keep flies in reach and let drowned flies dry with a magnetic fly patch that clips just about anywhere. Our fly boxes also make a great gift for anglers.
