The Story

The Orvis-Endorsed Fly-Fishing Program at the Woodstock Inn & Resort allows guests from beginner to expert to cast on some of Central Vermont's most picturesque streams and lakes while honing fly-fishing skills you can use for a lifetime.

For the experienced angler, our guides will take you on exciting excursions to tackle some of the more captivating hot spots. For those looking to learn how to fly cast or enhance their skills, we offer on-land or on-water lessons. Family and group lessons or excursions are a great way to try the sport! Wade into local waters with our guides to explore hidden pools, float the day away while casting into the larger rivers from our Outcast Drifter 13 raft, or head to the area's stocked ponds in our Clacka-Craft drift boat. Our fishing program practices catch and release, and is proud to be committed to the health of the Vermont fisheries.

Find the industry's best gear at the Resort's Fly-Fishing Shop, Vermont's only Orvis Authorized Dealer. From rods, reels, and thousands of flies to outdoor gear like backpacks and clothing, the shop is stocked for adventure!

Located in idyllic Woodstock, Vermont, the Woodstock Inn & Resort defines country sophistication in one of New England's most charming and popular vacation destinations. After a day of fishing relax at our Spa, play a round of golf, or nestle into one of our fine dining establishments and accommodations.

What is Provided:

Our all-inclusive trips really are just that. All you have to do is come with the clothing you need for fishing. Your guide will have a full stock of Orvis fly rods and reels, vests, waders, flies, lines, leaders, and tippets you will need. With all of that said, please feel free to bring your favorite rod and equipment. The guides are more than happy to accommodate. Full-day trips include a lunch with beverages.

Gear Recommendations:

Our guides will outfit you with all the Orvis fishing gear you will need, however feel free to bring your own equipment if you prefer. For both our lessons and excursions, we recommend you bring clothing for fishing and local weather (we advise layers, a raincoat and lightweight gloves), a hat, polarized sunglasses (for protection during casting class and guided trips), insect repellent, and sunscreen.

What to Bring:

We recommend you bring a water bottle, extra clothing layers, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, bug repellent, and a camera to document your big catch!

Season:

We typically fish April-October, however certain year-round options for lessons and excursions are available (weather permitting).

Springtime and fall bring the best trout fishing in the area. When the weather and water warms up in July and August, we tend to move to the small brooks and streams and target some warm-weather species like bass and panfish.

Species:

  • Brown trout
  • Brook trout
  • Rainbow trout
  • Smallmouth bass

Small Rivers and Brooks:

The Ottauquechee River
The Ottauquechee River flows through town and is a fun river to learn in and explore.

The Kedron Brook
The Kedron Brook runs right through the town of Woodstock and has wonderful pools that make it worthy of exploration.

These beautiful ponds offer trout and bass in a beautiful setting. Our guides will be available to give you tips as you cast from shore or in one of our Clacka-Craft drift boats.

Typical Weather:

Early spring weather can be chilly (40-50 degrees F), and the waters run cold with snowmelt. Dress in layers and bring a raincoat. Summers are typically sunny, and temperatures range from 65-85 daily, sunscreen is important! Fall cools down again, but the sun can warm up to 75 during the day so dress in layers. Winters are cold and thermal layers are important if you head out on the waters. Temperatures do not usually get above 35 degrees.
