The Story

Travel to Scotland and join Orvis for traditional wingshooting at Craigsanquhar Country Estate. For several centuries, driven shooting has been the hallmark pastime of the British gentry. Over the last several decades, the Scottish shooting experience has matured to amalgamate quality shooting with exceptional hospitality in the midst of stunning landscapes. At Craigsanquhar Estate you will experience the very essence of Scotland and its heritage.

Located in the rolling hills of the Fife countryside, our primary sporting estates are within a 10-minute drive of Craigsanquhar. Our Estate is specifically designed to cater to shooters, with designated locker rooms, gun safes, dog kennels, and a private lounge designed to allow shooters to unwind and boast of their achievements over our fine collection of single malt whiskies.

With over 30 years of experience in the shooting and hospitality industry, our award-winning team was named Scottish Hotel of the Year 2019. Our Sporting Club host, born and raised in Fife, Scotland, was introduced to wingshooting at a young age as a beater on some of Scotland's most prestigious shooting estates. At the age of 15, he became the youngest field trial champion in the United Kingdom with his beloved Springer Spaniel, Hillbilly Jimmy. Twenty-five years later, he is still enjoying the sport of shooting and sharing his passion by introducing the traditional Scottish driven shoot to North Americans. The Scottish landscape provides habitat for the birds and conditions for shoots that truly define the sport of shooting.

Craigsanquhar Sporting Club is especially geared to North American guests and provides all resources from the minute you arrive in Scotland until you return to the airport for the trip back home.

Meals and Dining

After a long day of shooting, there is nothing better than unwinding fireside with a cold pint of beer brewed in Scotland, a single malt whisky distilled just miles up the road, or a specialty cocktail before enjoying the culinary delights of Nathaniel's Restaurant. We encourage our shooters to bring back some of the daily bag for our chefs to prepare for dinner. Our seasonal menus celebrate the legacy of Scottish agriculture. It honors the people who, for generations, have been growing our food; the Scottish farm families who work year-round tending to their land, seeds, and crops that become the food we serve to our families. We know our food is handled with care, harvested at its peak, and made available for us to enjoy together.

Additional Activities

Craigsanquhar can arrange for you to play golf in St. Andrews and the surrounding golf courses, fishing, spa treatments, historical sightseeing of castles and fishing villages, or day trips to Edinburgh and the Scottish Highlands.

Species

Driven and mini-driven shoots focus on pheasant, but mallard duck, partridge, snipe, woodcock, and pigeon are often shot. Orvis and Craigsanquhar reserves the right to modify an itinerary due to circumstances beyond our control to ensure quality shooting days.  This can include subsituting pheasant, mallard and partridge depending on the health of the brood.

Region/Terrain

The shooting estates are located in the northeast region of Scotland. A countryside filled with rolling hills, rivers, craggy ravines, pristine woodland, game crops, and ground cover. The shooting estates pride themselves on maintaining their woodland, preserving the natural terrain of the land with untouched landscapes, and conservation of the wildlife that inhabits it.

Typical Weather

September to November is likely to experience temperatures ranging from around 41° to 60°F. It is possible that you will experience some snowfall.

What Else to Bring?

We recommend that you bring a small medicine pack with over-the-counter painkillers, relief for heartburn, allergy medicines, and anything that you are accustomed to using as they are significantly different in Scotland.

Gear Recommendations

You may bring your own gun; however, a UK gun license holder must collect from the airport. You may not bring it with you. We can arrange this service for an additional fee if you wish to do so. All ammunition must be purchased in the UK. We do have a selection of guns at Craigsanquhar that you may use as part of your package.

The weather is unpredictable this time of year so be prepared to layer. It is good practice to wear a shirt and tie on all days. For walked-up days, we strongly suggest a knee-height wellie-style boot. For the driven day, traditional tweeds, moleskin, or corduroy-style trousers, and an ankle-height boot is suggested. Waterproof coat and trousers are priority for all days.

Example Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival Day
After arriving at the Edinburgh Airport, you will gather your belongings, rendezvous with other trip participants, and meet your transfer driver for the shuttle to Craigsanquhar Estate. The scenic drive to the estate lasts a bit more than an hour and carries guests out of the city and into the Scottish countryside. Upon arrival at Craigsanquhar House, you will be assisted to your room and given time to settle in. Depending on when your flight gets in, you may take some time to rest, tour the estate grounds, or have coffee, lunch, or a drink at the restaurant at the estate.

Day 2: Rest and Explore the Region
The first full day is yours to use as you wish. Explore nearby St. Andrews, go on a distillery tour, purchase some tweeds and shooting accessories, or have a pint at the local pub. The small towns around Craigsanquhar are charming and easily accessible, and private car service can be arranged through Craigsanquhar to facilitate your exploration.

Days 3-5: Driven Birds
Start the morning with a hearty Scottish breakfast in the Craigsanquhar restaurant and then assemble in the gun room to suit up and review the day’s schedule. Guns, ammunition, and accessories will be assembled for the day afield and loaded into the shoot vehicles. The Gamekeeper will escort the shooting team to the field in a fleet of Land Rovers to drive to the estates for an overview with the gamekeeper and a formal introduction to the Shoot Captain. Pegs will be drawn, and the shooting party will head out to take their positions on the line. Traditional Elevenses and a hot lunch will break up the day, and the shoot will conclude with a return to the stables for cigars and Champagne at day’s end. The group will return to Craigsanquhar where a piper will kick off a formal, multicourse game dinner comprised of game taken over the previous shooting days.

Day 6: Departure
After breakfast, drivers will transfer guests back to Edinburgh Airport.

The Mansion House hosts 13 unique bedrooms, each bursting with the character, luxury, and charm of the country house. We offer a combination of rooms with a beautiful view of the surrounding countryside. Adjacent to the Mansion House are four villas. Each is a three-bedroom luxury villa with a private bath in each bedroom, and an additional powder bathroom, full kitchen, dining area, living room, laundry room, Wi-fi, indoor and outdoor fireplaces. Villas are available based on availability and willingness to share with other guests.
