Rouse's Poodle

This articulated streamer pattern is a meaty offering that attracts big fish.

Jamie Rouse, the 2007 Orvis-Endorsed Guide of the Year, knows a thing or two about designing flies for large brown trout. His home waters are the White and Little Red Rivers of Arkansas, home to world-record class browns. The Rouse's Poodle, tied with arctic fox, breathes amazingly underwater and can entice a strike from even the most lethargic of winter fish. In black, white, olive.

    Big Fish Only - 9/19/2014
    By: from Heber Springs, AR

I have been using one of these flies for about for weeks now (fishing 4 or so times a week). This has become my go to low-light streamer pattern. I am still using the same fly I started with a month ago, and I would estimate landing about 30 trout on this particular fly. I have been quite impressed with the durability, not to mention its performance. It gives a very realistic presentation. The fact that most fish that take this fly are landed by the front hook tells me how aggressively they attack it, because they get a mouthful when they take it. I have not yet caught a fish smaller than 12 inches on this fly, and most are 15 inches and bigger. It seems to be attracting primarily browns (a BIG thumbs up in my book), so if you are out for Bows in a multi-breed river, my recommendation is another streamer. Only two thing to be wary of: 1) you cant use it in many Catch and Release only areas, because of the dual barbed hooks and 2) takes a little bit of practice to cast on a lightweight rod. That second hook loves to wrap himself around your tippet.

Big Trout React to this fly - 4/21/2012

The first time I fished this fly I caught the biggest Brown I've ever caught. It brought me the fish of a lifetime. I see fish react to this fly much more often and with more aggression than some of the streamers I've fished for the past 12 years. the Arctic Fox fur causes an extremely realistic water displacement. This will be my go to streamer pattern anywhere in the US. On a cloudy day or in high water, grab a couple of these and make sure to take your camera!

Son in law used this fly to catch a 28 inch Brown Trout on the Little Red River. It was a good experience and the guide - Jamie Rouse who developed this fly was a great guide.

    Good Fly - 3/19/2011

I tried out this fly today, and I caught a fun 16 inch pickerel with it. The fly looks very realistic in the water, which is not particularly expected by the appearance of the fly out of the water. The two hooks made the fly long enough that I didn't have any need for a wire leader in landing the pickerel.
