Dave Brown, AZ

Overview

Since 2000, Dave Brown has guided wingshooters for wild birds in Arizona and Saskatchewan. During the fall, Dave and his staff are busy with The Running Hun Bird Camp conducting waterfowl and upland hunts (Huns and Sharptails), then from November through February, Dave is at home in Arizona conducting quail hunts (Mearns, Gambels, and Scaled) along with dove hunts.

Date Range

Arizona Quail and Dove Hunts: Mid November - February
Along with great winter weather, Arizona offers traveling wingshooters the opportunity to hunt three species of Quail (Gambels, Mearns and Scaled) along with excellent Dove Hunting.

Dave & Lisa Brown are the owners of Dave Brown Outfitters LLC which is based in their hometown of Patagonia, AZ. Dave spends a great deal of time guiding, hunting, dog training, and scouting throughout the southeast corner of the state.

We take great pride in our dog string which is comprised of 10 English Pointers, 4 Brittanys, and 2 Labrador Retrievers. This is the largest commercial dog string in Arizona, which allows us to provide fresh and highly trained dogs to a clientele that seeks a top shelf Arizona Quail hunting experience. Our hunts are based out of Patagonia, located 70 miles southeast of Tucson. Patagonia is a “funky” little mountain town nestled between two mountain ranges, and is home to some decent restaurants and lodging choices.

Quail hatches depend on seasonal rains. Populations of specific Quail species may vary from year to year, however pursuing an Arizona Grand Slam is realistic. Although we do not have a set minimum amount of days for our hunts, we do suggest hunting for three days. Our hunting grounds vary and are a mix of State and Federal lands (Arizona is 85% public lands) along with private holdings.

Saskatchewan Upland Bird and Waterfowl Hunts: Sept. 15 - Oct 31
In Wingshooting circles, stellar waterfowl hunting has always been associated with the province of Saskatchewan. What is "under the radar" is the best wingshooting opportunities for Hungarian Partridge and Sharptailed Grouse to be found in North America.

Since 2000, we have been guiding on the Saskatchewan prairie under two outfitting licenses, allowing us to operate in the entire S.W. corner of the province. Along with Huns and Sharptails, pockets of Ruffed Grouse can also be found in parts of our Outfitting Territory. All our hunts are based out of small farming towns and lodging is either at a motel or at one of our hunter houses. We can only take on 6 hunters during a stay, with a two hunters per guide ratio. Of course the duck hunting is an excellent sideline to upland bird hunting. We either shoot over small sloughs or fields, and have a large inventory of decoys and other essentials including custom blinds ensuring your hunt is a success. Contact us for more of the details.

    A Fantastic Time - 2/19/2014
    By: from Carlsbad, CA, USA

I have hunted bobwhite quail and pheasant with dogs for over 30 years but this was my first time hunting Mearns Quail. While I knew nothing about hunting these birds, Dave knew the birds, their habits, where to find them and had access to lots of beautiful country in AZ to hunt so you were never walking the same ground. And I must say that Dave's bird dogs were top of the line! I've hunted over many bird dogs (both good and bad) and the dogs are a big part of the hunting experience. Dave's dogs were well trained, in great shape, had great noses (and found birds in tough scenting conditions). It was a great hunt and I had a fantastic time.

    Dave Brown/Mearns Quail Hunt - 2/18/2014
    By: from San Diego

Dave is an outstanding guide and dog handler. He's fun, and knows the terrain, birds and dogs. He leads the way on strenuous hunts through challenging terrain, always taking time to educate about bird habitat and behavior and expectations from the dogs. We brought dogs too and Dave did a masterful job of running our dogs when we wanted and matching our dogs with his. He even suited up our dogs with GPS collars. He's superb.

Another Great Hunt in Arizona - 1/13/2014
    By: from Wasilla, Alaska

Dave is consistent in that he works his tail off to find birds and make things happen while keeping a positive attitude. His English Pointers, Brittanies and Labs are stellar in their handling of birds. Watching Dave handle three dogs and two hunters flawlessly in a woodland environment is amazing. We saw numerous coveys of Mearn's Quail in the forest and on alternate days saw good numbers of Scaled and Gambel's Quail in the desert.

Desert Quail at their very best! - 1/10/2014
    By: from Orange, MA, USA

There is nothing better in North American upland hunting than what Dave Brown is offering from his home in Patagonia, AZ. Hard-flying Mearns, Scaled, and Gambel's quail over a string of Brittany's and Pointers, all within sight of the Mexican Border... it's rugged and expansive country, and nobody knows its birds like Dave Brown. He leads hunts with a confidence and enthusiasm that is infectious. His knowledge of the terrain, his dog work, and his drive are matched only by his kindness and joviality. This hunt made for the perfect interruption of a cold New England winter.

A friend and I sought out Dave to introduce us to Mearns Quail. A new species for us. Dave is providing A-1 service. He is quite knowledgeable of the birds habitat and habits. He runs a healthy string of happy Pointers, Brits and Labs. The dogs are a pleasure to watch work game. I have hunted wild upland birds with pointing dogs in now 10 states over the course of 44 years. Dave provided us with all the infrastructure to enjoy a great experience at a great value.

Great guide, great dogs, magnificent country - 1/16/2013
    By: from Patagonia, Arizona

Dave is a master guide with abundant talent and enthusiasm, and he knows his area and the quarry intimately. He worked hard and put in long days. He went above and beyond our expectations. We hunted Mearns Quail for two days and the Gambel's and Scaled Quail for one. Dave's string of English Pointers, Brittanies and Labs are seasoned and enthusiastic, and Dave handles them expertly. Dave loves his dogs and each of them has a great personality and they respond well to his handling. The Patagonia region of southern Arizona is spectacular. Great trip.
