The Story

Whether you're interested in chasing steelhead in the waters of western New York or drifting limited access stretches of the Clarion River in northwestern Pennsylvania in pursuit of wild browns, Damon Newpher knows the fish and the water. He fished the Upper Clarion as a child with his grandfather, ventured west to guide in Montana as a young man, and returned to helm the Orvis-awarded Glendorn Lodge fishing and hunting operation for more than a decade. For those who set their sights farther afield, Damon has hosted trips to Belize, Mexico, and The Bahamas, and he keeps a bag packed and local guides at the ready.

Now based in Ellicottville, New York, Damon brings the unique combination of fishing expertise and hospitality experience to every adventure. From deftly navigating his ClackaCraft between proven holes to grilling mid-day steaks along a quiet riverbank, every detail is patiently anticipated for anglers of all skill levels.

And speaking of angling, when the steelhead are running, Damon will be wading into the fray along Cattaraugus Creek and the Lower Niagara River, just to name a couple. Depending on the season and the weather, though, he will also be fishing for salmon, musky, pike, and smallmouth bass, on lakes and rivers across western New York and northwestern Pennsylvania.

Half- and full-day trips are available, equipment is provided, and itineraries can be tailored to suit ambitions, abilities, and conditions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding guide Had a great day fishing for steelhead in the Erie tribs with Damon. He worked hard to put us on fish (and help us land them!), provided great instruction, and was great fun to spend the day with. Others in my party have already re-booked with him and I will definitely be returning to fish with Damon again as well. Highly recommended for anglers of all abilities.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Guide! Being somewhat new to the fly fishing game, I booked a trip with Damon and conveyed to him that I really wanted to improve my skill set. I was extremely happy with the trip. Damon is an extremely patient and knowledgeable guide who definitely made me a better fisherman. I had such a great experience that I booked another trip. I recommend his services to anyone who is interested in learning the sport or a seasoned fly fisherman who is looking to pick up some new tricks to add to the kit bag. I hope to be fishing with him again soon!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great time and great fishing! My son and I are both novice fly fishermen, but Damon was patient and really showed us a great time. We hiked one day and floated the next, and he really worked hard to make sure that we got into some fish. He also was very patient as he worked with us on technique, set up and talking about entomology. I would highly recommend Damon, and will definitely go back for Steelhead.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Top notch guide Damon will give you a trip to remember no matter what type of experience you decide on. I've done 2 float trips with him and a walk and wade too. He helped my 11 year old son catch his first trout! Damon is easy going and knowledgeable. He's the only guide I'll use in the area.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Damon is Amazing! Damon is a great guide. I've fished with him near Hamburg NY and on the Clarion River in PA. He has great knowledge of the conditions, the water, the fish and the flies. He's also really great at helping beginners learn this fun sport, including myself and my teenage son. I'm getting much more comfortable with fly fishing because of Damon. Lastly, he's a really great guy to hang out with, which is an important part of a day fishing. I can't wait to get out there with him again!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An Exceptional Guide! I have fished with Damon in Pennsylvania and New York for over a decade, and each trip has been a memorable and enjoyable experience. Damon is an exceptional guide whose passion for fishing surpasses all of the other freshwater and saltwater guides I have fished with. He is a true professional who does whatever it takes to put you on the fish. Importantly, Damon’s expertise, pleasant disposition, and communication skills makes him an excellent instructor. Whether it is reading the waters, selecting the appropriate fly based on the conditions, or refining your casting technique, Damon’s helpful instruction will simply make you a better angler and enrich your overall experience on the water. Whether you are new to the sport, or have been fishing for years, I absolutely recommend booking a trip with Damon, especially a float trip on the Clarion!
