Sandanona Shooting Grounds front porch entrance

Orvis Sandanona, in upstate New York, is open 362 days a year. Visit and enjoy a round of sporting clays, attend a school, take a private lesson with one of our skilled instructors, join in on one of our monthly events, unwind on our wrap-around porch, let us host your next retreat, or hunt our fields with an Upland Membership.

This is a place where the traditions of the field and the hunt are held in the highest regard; it is the oldest permitted shotgun shooting club in the country. The main lodge was built during the presidency of Thomas Jefferson, and, using its richly textured past as a foundation, Orvis Sandanona has built a thriving, modern sporting clays shooting ground that is consistently ranked among the very best.

Whether you’re taking your first shot or you’re a seasoned uplands hunter—you will find something to love at Orvis Sandanona. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Our Services

Orvis introduced one of the first sporting clays courses in the country at its Manchester, Vermont, Shooting School. Orvis Sandanona upholds this tradition with two courses, running simultaneously on the property.

Our Woodland Course is a 18-stand standard, listed in Esquire magazine’s top 10 list of courses in the United States. The Upland Course, new in summer of 2019, boasts 15 stands and expands your options at the property. The diversity of the courses, in addition to the regular refreshes, offers shooters an ever-changing challenge. A trapper will join you on the course, ensuring you have the best experience possible.

Must be at least 12 years old to participate. Please call ahead for reservations.

If you cannot make one of our fly-fishing or shotgun shooting school dates, would like a refresher after a school, or if you need to warm up for that trip to England shooting high pheasants, or that trip to the Gunnison in Colorado casting for trout; our school instructors are available for private instruction all year round.

Private instruction is booked by the hour—one-on-one with an instructor or up to a group of four people. You can set curriculum based on what you want to cover: basics, preparation for an upcoming hunting trip, or perfect a specific shot.

Orvis Sandanona's highly trained instructional fly-fishing and wingshooting staff can help you at any experience level, from novice to pro. Call 845-677-9701 to make reservations

We are set amidst rolling hills and horse farms, just an hour-and-a-half from New York City, and are steeped in the tradition of fly-fishing. We're just minutes away from casting in classic eastern trout waters like the Roeliff Jansen Kill or Wappingers. Take advantage of Orvis Fly-Fishing school instructors available for individual or group lessons on our stocked ponds or private trout stream. These experiences are open to all ability levels.
