The Story

Magic Waters is perfectly nestled in the mountain valleys of the Aysén region in Southern Chile. The lodge's close proximity to the costal rainforests and Eastern Patagonian Steppe provide each angler with a multitude of opportunity to experience the region's best fishing while enjoying some of the world's most impressive, natural scenery. Whether you like to wade spring creeks, float on freestone rivers, or cast large dries at cruising fish in a turquoise blue lake, Magic Waters is a place you will fall in love with. Lodge manager and owner, Eduardo Barrueto, grew up outside of the city of Coyhaique and enjoys sharing the excellent Patagonian fishing with each and every guest.

The small city of Coyhaique is the mecca of dry fly fishing in Chilean Patagonia. It is often compared to the American West 100 years ago with less people with non-educated, larger than average sized fish. Surrounded by mountains and glaciers, it has more fishable waters that you can imagine. The landscape of the Aysén region is incredibly diverse; you can travel from the dry, arid pampas (Patagonian Steppe) to the temperate rainforest (Paloma River) in just over an hour. One day you can fish a meandering “Montana type spring creek” while spending the next day in a gin clear river system of “Pacific Northwest style” in a temperate rainforest.

The main watersheds are the Simpson and Paloma Rivers, both famous for the finest dry fly fishing in Chile. Wild brown and rainbow trout are the main species targeted in these rivers, as well as a short, but decent run of King and Coho salmon during the summer months. The salmon are not easily caught on fly, but the runs are significant enough to give the occasional “shot” at one or two on a trip if they are in the river system.

Fishing season in Coyhaique starts in early October, ending the first week of May. Early season can provide anglers the opportunity to fish for big migratory, lake run rainbows. This is very good time to swing big streamers and look for big aggressive trophy fish looking for some action after winter. The dry fly fishing and hatches historically start during late November early December. With longer and warmer days, the hatches become more intense and the fish start to look up. Between the hundreds of species of beetles, dragonflies, grasshoppers, caddis, mayflies and stoneflies, the dry fly fishing is pretty steady until April. In the Patagonian fall, the weather gets cooler, days are shorter, but the migratory brown trout start to move. There is always a chance to get hooked into one these fish if the weather and water levels cooperate.

Eduardo and his guides will do whatever they can to help fulfill your fishing expectations. Magic Waters has private access to rarely fished spring creeks if you enjoy wade fishing. The lodge is also within an hour drive of some temperate rainforest waters where you can sight fish for rising fish or target the aggressive fish with streamers. Anglers can also float the freestones and navigate the rapids of the Simpson casting to fish with dries or streamers. This region of Chile also has some of the best dry fly, lake fishing in the world for wild browns. The lodge has a couple small “lagunas” that you can fish after dinner to catch the evening hatch.

After settling in, lunch or dinner will be served. If you feel like you can´t refuse the opportunity to fish, the lodge will arrange to take you to one of their “lagunas”. You will have many choices of fishing and depending on fishing reports, weather and water levels, your guide will give you your options. All of the rivers are accessed by vehicle and you can expect to drive a minimum of 30 minutes, and up to 1 ½ hours, depending on what you would like to do. There are a multitude of fishing options and Magic Waters employs some of the region’s best and most experienced guides. Each guide is bilingual and will help customize your fishing trip to assure that you have a great experience.

Departure is generally at 8:30 am. You will drive to your fishing destination and return anytime between 6:30– 8:30 pm. When you arrive back you will be greeted with a cocktail and appetizers before dinner and discuss the following days plans with your guide. The guides and staff are very flexible, so if you want to leave earlier or later to match your fishing expectations, they will.

Day 8 | Departure

Breakfast is served at 8:00 am. Depending on departing times, you can have lunch at the lodge or depart to the airport right away in the morning. The lodge is more than willing to take you into Coyhaique to see the Patagonian City and then drive to the airport if you have an afternoon departure.

The Lodge

Magic Waters is located at 35 miles northwest of Balmaceda airport and about 20 miles from the city of Coyhaique. The lodge is located at the end of a gravel road situated at the outlet of Barroso Lake in a small mountain valley, overlooking 2 small “lagunas”. Built in recent years by the Barreuto family using local wood and stones, it was created to give a relaxed atmosphere so that all guests will feel at home. From the great room, you will be able to take in the beautiful Patagonian panorama while a fire is burning in the fireplace made from local stones. The lodge has a fly tying area, room for drying waders and fishing gear as well. They also offer laundry service, telephone and an internet connection (please do not rely on this connection for daily e-mail or VOIP calls as it is very slow and often does not work).

Your hosts for your stay are Eduardo Barrueto and his wife Consuelo Balboa. Both are avid cooks, excel in guest service and have a good taste for wine and Chilean cusine. Food and meals are a very important part of the experience at Magic Waters. The lodge chef is Sandra, Eduardo's mother. She prepares and cooks favorite recipes coined in her family for generations. She has been the chef in various lodges and restaurants in the area, and has developed a fusion cuisine between typical Chilean and Patagonian cuisine, bringing an identity to each meal. The family grows all of their own vegetables, purchases lamb and cattle from local ranchers and buys fresh seafood from family friends in the area. All of the food at the lodge is locally sourced and organic.

Chile is famous for good wines and Magic Waters is proud to have a large selection of great red and white wines from the best vineyards in Chile and Argentina. Every night, excellent wine will be paired to match your evening cuisine.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Magical place and truly outstanding!! After reading a wonderful article about Magic Waters in the NYTimes, we decided to book a trip there. Our visit was flawless from beginning to end. Eduardo and Consuelo are exceptional, warm and gracious hosts- so welcoming and generous - who foster a team approach among their staff that permeated every experience we had. There is a gentle cadence to each day that provided the foundation for fantastic fishing and evening camaraderie around the fireplace and at dinner. Fishing in Patagonia is a remarkable adventure and Magic Waters provided perfection!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great people, great food, great fishing For a great vacation, I value people, product, and food. Here the owners are just wonderful people. Importantly, the staff take great pride in the lodge and helping guests. During my week with a friend, we make friends with all the 10 other guests for a great time. The food is wonderful. Both owners are trained chefs and it shows. They will modify menus any way you want and serve local organic products where possible. Finally, the fishing was great. Not always easy as some days the weather paid problems but my last day walking the Hemulas, caught 18 fish including two 20 inchers between there and a Spring Creek. Definitely recommend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Can't wait to go back! The minute you walk in the door, Eduardo and Consuela feel like old friends. Eduardo makes every effort to find out what you're looking for then customizes the fishing experience around you and every day was a different and special adventure. The guides are really fishy and just a pleasure to spend time with. The lodge is luxurious, the food incredible and the location is remote and gorgeous. I'm counting the days until I can go back.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow! I have fished in many places, Colorado, Canada, and my Home state of Alaska. I find that as the years have gone by under my feet it has been more of a challenge to get to fish that have not been caught a lot of times. In fact, the last few times I fished the Green River below the Flaming Gorge some of the bigger fish seemed to give up quickly, almost like they knew that they would be released. Not so in the Magic Waters area! Even the small fish in the spring creeks fought strongly!! They were the most colorful and happy to atack a hopper or beatle no matter how hard you put the fly down! Once I had two fish smack heads while attacking my fly!! Eduardo and his family and staff are excellent at what they do! From the time I landed in Balmaceda until I left to come back home I wanted for nothing! I had the great fortune to fish with Eduardo the first and last day on two different spring creeks. That was the most challenging and fun because he took us to places that he grew up fishing. Beautiful, clean( no trash) and majestic! Everyday was something to behold. We rode horses one day to go fishing and had lamb for lunch cooked on an open fire and saw nobody but the people from our small group of 4 anglers! I will go back again, I believe I missed a few fish! Oh and Orians belt is upside down when you get that far south! After working for several years as a chef and guide it was really nice to be on the other side of the coin!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceptional experience! My husband and I spent the first week of February at Magic Waters. The entire experience was exceptional. This is a very special place – it was our first trip to Patagonia, and we are going to return in 2021 to fish their River of Dreams Base Camp. The fishing was great and their program is diverse and well organized. Eduardo is truly able to customize the week for each client because he has such a wide variety of water to fish and so many outstanding guides. We fished rivers, lakes, and spring fed streams for lots of big browns and some nice rainbows, primarily on big dry flies. Each destination seemed more beautiful than the last. The lodge is beautifully designed with very comfortable rooms (and beds), dramatic views, multiple common areas for relaxing, and a hot tub on the deck that was heavily used by our group. The food and level of service was completely over the top – mid-week our group demanded that the kitchen staff come out for a standing ovation. Seriously, the food is local, fresh, gourmet. I gained weight. Everything comes together at Magic Waters. There is a consistent attention to detail and quality on the part of the entire staff. Eduardo and Consuelo clearly have a professional and, most importantly, personal approach to creating a truly memorable experience for each client. They clearly love what they do, and we loved our week there. Go.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beyond Magical I went fishing at Magic Waters in December 2019. The lodge is beautifully situated between 2 lakes with spectacular views. The rooms are wonderful with very nice communal areas. I would rate the facilities right up there with other top class fishing lodges. Food was great with excellent service. However the fishing was the main event. I fished 5 days total. The fishing was a mixture of lakes, bank & wading of creeks/rivers and float trips. The phenomenal diversity of the fishing experiences with plenty of monster trout made this the best fishing trip I have ever been on. The guides were top notch and work hard at getting you on good fish. I will be back!!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best lodge and experience in Chile! I have been fortunate to spend a week or two each winter at Magic Waters Patagonia since 2013...and I'm already setting up my return for 2021. There is no better lodge or experience in Chile than Magic Waters! Eduardo and Consuelo treat guests like family, and the entire lodge staff ensures that the whole experience is five star! Food, accommodations, drinks, guides, gear, and facilities are all top notch. Book with Magic Waters and you will not be disappointed!
