Chimalfe Patagonia Lodge is located on the banks of the Yelcho Lake near the small village of Puerto Cardenas. The lake is fed by the Futaleufu River at its southern tip, near the tiny settlement of Puerto Ramirez. The river then flows northward through mountainous and glaciated terrain, until it outflows via the Yelcho River northwest and empties into the Pacific at the Gulf of Corcovado, near Chaitén.
Typically, guests fly in to Santiago, and on through Puerto Montt (Tepual Airport) then to La Paloma Airfield (from Tepual Airport to La Paloma Airfield takes approximately 20 minutes depending on traffic) and then to on Chaiten Airport.
If you arrive to Puerto Montt in the afternoon, we highly recommend that you spend the night in Puerto Varas. Puerto Varas has several high-quality hotels. The city center is small and cozy while most local attractions are within walking distance. There are many excellent restaurants to choose from and a Casino that’s lively and popular.
From Puerto Varas, the drive to La Paloma Airfield in Puerto Montt takes approximately 30 minutes. Flights from La Paloma Airfield to Chaitén leave at 9:30 AM. There are two reliable airlines that fly this route. Members of the guide staff will be waiting for you at Chaiten Airport to take you to the Lodge, a 60-minute drive.
Each day starts at 8:30 AM with a top-flight breakfast. When the fishermen are ready, they will be taken to the dock, 200 meters from the lodge or off in the vehicles to other rivers in the region. Riverside lunches are served around 1:30 PM, or whenever stomachs begin to rumble. A charcoal-grilled barbecue or a fire disc is the norm, but sandwiches are always an option as well. To complement the meal, there are always Chilean wine and, or beer. If the weather conditions are cool or rainy, the lodge will add a delicious soup or broth to keep you warm. After lunch, you will continue to test your flies on Patagonian trout until you decide you are ready to head back to the lodge for the day.
Dinners are relaxed and are usually served between the hours of 8:30 – 9:30 pm with hors d’oeuvres served beforehand. The lodge offers local, traditional Chilean dishes paired with top shelf wines. After or during dinner you will review your day with the guides and make a plan for the next. There are a variety of rivers and fishing situations that you will be able to choose from and adjustments can be made to offer activities tailor-made for each guest.
The last day at Chimalfe starts with an earlier breakfast so you can make the trip back to the Chaiten Airfield. Flights back to Puerto Montt are available from Monday to Saturday at 10:30 AM. We recommend that you prepare for possible delays when booking your flight from Puerto Montt to Santiago. It’s best to choose a time after 3:00 PM. Delays may happen due to weather conditions in Chaitén and/or Puerto Montt.
Yelcho Lake is located in the Lake District, southern Chile in the Palena Province. The lake is fed by the Futaleufú River and is one of the deepest lakes in Chile. It is a popular location for fly-fishing enthusiasts who are rewarded with catches of brown and rainbow trout that can be taken on dry flies, streamers and nymphs. Season opens in October and ends the first Sunday of May.
To fish the different rivers properly (Palena, Yelcho, Futaleufu, and a few secret spots) you will need to carry a few rods rigged with specific flies and be ready to switch at a moment’s notice. If you get the opportunity to smack your foam dragonfly into the rings left by a feeding monster you will see a take that will send shivers down your spine. Most of the fish in this region of Chile are extremely healthy and strong. The quality of the fishing is beyond the imagination.
The newly constructed lodge was built for anglers. Bedrooms are comfortable and all uniquely set up to accommodate couples, singles, or double occupancy “fishing buddies. The lodge can accommodate 8 guests and each bedroom has a private bathroom. Fine linen sheets, top-quality duvets, handcrafted furniture, all add to the ambiance of the spectacular views from each room. All rooms are equipped with luggage storage, heated towel rails, and bath robes and closet space. A large deck with comfortable outdoor couches and wood fire hot tubs are also available to guests.
Wi-Fi is available at the lodge and there is spotty cell phone service. Once outside the lodge, you will be beyond the reach of all of these. In the field, each guide will have a satellite phone for emergency use only and the all of the staff carry short distance radios.
