Species You Fish for by Season
Within an hour’s drive of Fernie, fly fishers can fish for brown, bull, cutthroat, and rainbow trout. Anglers can expect off-the-charts dry-fly fishing for most species, with the exception of bull trout, which can be targeted by fishing streamers.
From late June into July, the golden stonefly and green drake hatches are the focus of the early season fishing. As the season progresses pale morning duns, caddisflies, and yellow and lime sallies are the mainstays of the dry-fly fishing. From late July into September, the terrestrial fishing picks up, along with hatches of flavilinea, October caddis, and blue-winged olives. Besides the outstanding dry-fly fishing that the area is renowned for, nymphing and streamer fishing can also be productive.
