The Story

Enjoy Orvis-endorsed lodging at The Delphi Club on your fly-fishing trip to Abaco, Bahamas. The Club is close to the world-class bonefishing flats of the Abaco Marls, where large numbers of uneducated bonefish provide fantastic sport for anglers in uncrowded waters. There are also superb white-sand wading flats at Cherokee Sound and Cross Harbour, where larger and more seasoned bonefish, and occasional permit, present a special challenge. On any given day, Delphi has boats in the Marls, Cherokee Sound, Moore's Island, Sandy Point, as well as other secret places. Delphi was designed in the style of an 18th-century colonial house, with large wraparound verandas. The 8-bedroom lodge stands on a high ridge catching the sea breezes and panoramic ocean views. It’s a romantic getaway and luxury bonefish resort all rolled into one. The Delphi Club is not a hotel in a conventional sense. The atmosphere and way in which it’s run is more akin to a private country house, elegant yet informal, and very relaxed.

Secluded, tranquil and surrounded by dense vegetation, the Club stands some fifty feet above sea level and offers panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. The Lodge consists of eight well-appointed rooms, six on the ground floor and two on the third floor. Rooms come with the choice of selecting a king-size bed or queen-size twins. Each room features a private outdoor sitting area that offers guests panoramic ocean views. Delphi can accommodate 12 anglers in their own beds or 16 guests with couples.

Outside, the landscaped gardens feature bougainvillea, frangipani, oleander, hibiscus, Ficus, and a wide variety of palms and other shrubs. The Great Room at the center of the house features a generous dining table (which can seat twenty-four people), a discreet honesty bar, abundant comfortable seating, and ocean views right from the dining table. With fine antiques and an overhead gallery full of fishing paraphernalia, the Great Room is full of character and atmosphere. Relax with a cocktail in the great room or steal a quiet moment with a book in the well-appointed library. There’s an attractive infinity pool and patio with comfortable sun loungers. Meals are special occasions held in the great room. Our renowned chef draws inspiration from using the freshest seasonal ingredients paired with only the finest wines from the extensive cellars.

It’s important to note that the Club is not a hotel in any conventional sense. There are no bellhops or room service—it is a relaxed gathering of kindred spirits in a spectacular location with the best of everything.

A typical day* at Delphi starts with breakfast in the great room at 7am followed by heading out with the guides by 8am. We recommend anglers leave the lodge at 8am to get the most out of the day. Anglers are provided with a picnic lunch in a cool box and their choice of drinks, whether on full or short days. Anglers normally fish in pairs with a guide, however, single occupancy of a boat may be available at an extra charge.

The vast majority of the fishing is from boats, but there may be opportunities for wading, especially at Cherokee Sound or Sandy Point. Most of the fishing, however, is normally on the west side of Abaco in the famous Marls, where wading is a bit more difficult. Bonefish and other species are sometimes caught right off the Club beach.

The Club guides—and the launch points for the boats—are rotated during the week to provide maximum diversity of scenery and opportunity. Boat launch points are normally just a 10–20-minute drive from the Club, although we sometimes range further afield.

A typical fishing day can last anywhere between 5–8hrs with a return to the Club by 4:30pm or 1:30pm on short days. Once back at the lodge, there should be plenty of time for a shower or a dip in the pool before cocktail hour at 6:30pm, followed by dinner at 7:15pm.

*Please note that this itinerary is subject to change.

The islands of the Bahamas represent the bonefish capital of the world, and many count Abaco as a rare jewel. Abaco’s fishery is expansive but receives relatively light pressure, making for large numbers of cooperative fish. The famous Marls on the west side of the island offer over 200 square miles of first-class bonefish flats, which also give anglers occasional shots at permit and tarpon in the summer. On the east side, the sandy flats at Cherokee Sound, the Bite of Ole Robinson, Snake Cay, and a host of secret spots provide great bonefishing options, including some gorgeous wading flats, which play host to bonefish that can push into the double digits. Delphi guests also fish out of Sandy Point and from there can fish Gordaand Moore’s Island with plenty of permit sightings in the summer. Anglers fish 1-2 per boat on brand new Hells Bay skiffs, though solo options can be arranged.

What gear do you recommend?

For those who want to travel light, we have top-of-the-line house rods (8 weight Thomas & Thomas fly rods, with Hatch and Shilton reels) available for rental. The Club shop has plenty of local fly patterns, but you are encouraged to bring your favorite bonefish and other saltwater flies. When deciding what type of clothing to bring, choose lightweight cotton or synthetic fabrics. Synthetic fabrics and blends dry very quickly and remain comfortable after minimal washing. Cotton takes a long time to dry. Due to the exposed nature of the flats, we recommend loose, long-sleeved shirts and long pants for complete protection from the sun. If you prefer short sleeves and shorts, remember to wear plenty of sunscreen.
