Copal Tree Lodge

This Belize adventure lodge offers tropical nature, luxurious lodging, and unique fly fishing.

Copal Tree Lodge

Copal Tree Lodge is really the only place in far southern Belize where you can explore the tropical forest or fly fish and enjoy luxurious accommodations and gourmet food. It is surrounded by tropical nature both on land and at sea. This Belize adventure lodge is situated on a hillside above the Rio Grande in a 12,000 acre private reserve, where you can observe tropical birds in the canopy, and adjacent to the Port of Honduras Marine Reserve, one of the best places in the world to catch permit on a fly rod.

Modeled after the private game lodges in southern Africa, Copal Tree Lodge manages to provide luxury, service and excellent food without sacrificing an authentic natural experience. Accommodations consist of 16 individual, privately sited suites with comfortable sleeping and relaxing spaces, screened fresh-air verandas, luxurious spa-style baths, and air-conditioning.

Comprehensive conservation programs ensure ample populations of permit, snook and other fish in the surrounding waters, while monkeys, tapir and countless tropical bird species are spotted throughout the property. Copal Tree's miles of marked trails, nearby Mayan ruins, protected river kayaking and excursions to offshore islands provide plenty of activity in addition to fly fishing.

For the senses and relaxation, there's the Jabulani Spa with massages and more in a relaxing rainforest ambiance. The food at Copal Tree is absolutely outstanding; a true highlight as the culinary team provides an extraordinary level of dining each day with a menu that highlights Belizean flavors. Belize bird watching at Copal Tree is outstanding - 276 species were once recorded in a single day - and the lodge's unique location high on a ridge above a river gives you a unique viewpoint. There's tropical hardwood forest, mangroves, riparian, and saltwater habitat close to the lodge, making it one of the most interesting locations in Belize for birders.

Activities at Copal Tree Lodge

Copal Tree Lodge has a well-organized activities schedule and some of the best trained guides in Belize. There is always something to keep everyone as active as they choose during their stay. This Belize adventure tour has something for everyone.

Fly Fishing

Copal Tree has the best fly fishing guides in the area and they’ll help you get a shot at the elusive permit that are found here. Copal Tree guides have been trained to the highest standards for interpreting the tropical forest, birds and marine life. You will find them friendly, informative and well organized.

The Gulf of Honduras is permit country and you may get more shots at a permit here in one day than anywhere else we know in the Caribbean. Permit are elusive, finicky and landing one is a challenge, even for expert anglers, which is why they are so highly regarded as one of the saltwater flat’s most coveted catch. Copal Tree’s guides know permit fishing and will introduce you to the best waters each day throughout your Belize fly fishing experience.

There are also tarpon and bonefish in the region – tarpon are frequently seen rolling in the Rio Grande close to the lodge – and it’s possible to catch a grand slam (bonefish, tarpon and permit in the same day). Snook are found in the area too, and you may have a better chance of a hookup with one here than most places. However, permit are the stars and by far the most likely object of your fly fishing desire while staying at Copal Tree Lodge.

Copal Tree's most frequently targeted species:

  • Permit: The flats, lagoons and river channels around Copal Tree are among the best permit fisheries in the world. The largest fish are found from March through May, but ample numbers are found year- round
  • Tarpon: Large tarpon are migratory and are found in the waters around Copal Tree from May through September. Smaller tarpon, less than twenty pounds, can be found in the mangroves and brackish estuaries, creeks and lagoons year-round
  • Bonefish: The flats, lagoons and river mouths attract bonefish, but not in the same numbers as in northern Belize. We suggest you combine a stay at Copal Tree Lodge with a fishing lodge to the north if you are new to flats fishing
  • Snook: Coastal marine and brackish mangroves offer the best snook fishing from November through March
  • Jack Crevalle: Thriving in the area since the 1995 commercial net ban, large schools of jacks are found in the shallow flats and lagoons around Copal Tree from February through November
  • Mutton Snapper: This coveted species is found year-round in the sandy areas around mangroves, lagoons and river basins

A limited selection of fishing tackle is available for use at the lodge. We recommend that the experienced anglers bring their own tackle.

Conservation note: As of 2008, permit, tarpon and bonefish are catch-and-release only in Belize by law. Copal Tree Lodge strongly supports this conservation effort and Belize’s pro-conservation policies.

Copal Tree’s Jabulani Spa’s hand-carved wooden water feature and rock fountain help bestow a sense of tranquility throughout the spa. The structure, which was inspired by traditional Maya homes, features Belizean hardwoods harvested from hurricane-damaged trees and sustainable wood farms. A covered outdoor terrace leads to a spacious treatment area with floor-to-ceiling glass walls offering an unrestricted view of the rainforest canopy. The spa’s interior walls are adorned with approximately 70,000 natural stones, which reflect the surrounding environment and complement the oversized waterfall shower.

Situated in the tranquil tropical forest, surrounded by sensuous scents and sounds, you can enjoy exotic treatments that incorporate rare, local, organically produced Belizean ingredients including chocolate and orange, copal and lavender oils. These oils are made from local natural ingredients by two Doctors living in one of the nearby Villages. Copal Tree’s Spa Therapist uses the local oils in her massages and facials. Other spa treatments are also offered using only locally made salts and oils. These treatments include: full manicure, full pedicure, mani-art, and pedi-art. Appointments can be made at the front desk.

There are a variety of activities available and they are operated by trained guides using the adventure lodge’s own well-maintained vehicles and boats. The groups are small, with an average of six guests with a guide.
