The Story

If you like an adventure, this is the trip for you. Achala Outfitters has been fishing the Limay River for migratory trout since 1998. This is a fish-of-a-lifetime trip. You’ll float the Limay River in search of giant wild migratory freshwater brown trout as they move upriver to spawn.

The advantage of this program is that it offers the opportunity to fish both from a drift boat and by wading, using either single- or two-handed rods, depending on your preference.

This is your chance to check some of the largest freshwater brown trout in the world off your bucket list.

Achala Outfitters’s Orvis-Endorsed lodge on the Aluminé River also sees migratory trout cruising through and makes a great addition to this trip, giving you the opportunity to experience two completely different environments.

During the summer in Argentina, Achala Outfitters offers overnight nomadic camping. This program gives you access to lightly pressured wild resident brown and rainbow trout on the Limay River. During these warmer months, migratory trout return to the depths of the lakes, but plenty of fish remain in the river. The Limay River is a staple of Argentine fly fishing and is recognized around the world. A must-fish destination!

Packages include transportation to and from the airport, transportation during your stay, accommodations, wifi, and meals.

Achala Outfitters offers a couple of hotel options in Piedra del Águila and will manage the arrangements for you. Hotels provide a simple breakfast in your room with coffee, medialunas, and other Argentine pastries. Riverside gourmet lunches are available on every float. Dinners are served family style at a local restaurant with the entire team.

Achala Outfitters recommends spending your first night in Buenos Aires so you’re well rested and don’t risk missing a connecting flight. Once you arrive at either airport, team members will greet you and drive you to Piedra del Águila. Dinner is served each evening at a local restaurant with the entire team. Piedra del Águila is a small town with fewer than 5,000 residents. This trip is all about the fishing.

If the forecast doesn’t call for strong winds, expect early mornings, leaving around 7 AM and getting on the water by 8 AM Lunch is around 12:30 PM, followed by an afternoon float from approximately 2 to 5 PM. Since it’s fall in Argentina, the days are shorter and temperatures are cooler, especially in the early morning and evening. If strong winds are forecast, fishing days may be shorter to take advantage of the best conditions.

These giant trout are targeted with 8-weight rods, sinking lines, and 20-lb. leaders, which gives you an idea of the size of fish you’re after. Expect plenty of blind casting into pockets, pools, and runs where these fish are known to hold. If you like streamer fishing, this is the trip for you.

Recommended streamers:

  • Diego’s Suri, #6–8
  • Clouser Minnow, gray/white or black, #6
  • Summer Moal, black, black/purple, black/chartreuse or black/orange (large & small)
  • Woolly Bugger with rubber legs, black, olive or brown, #6
  • Intruder, black, green or blue, #6

These trout aren’t constantly feeding like rainbow trout might. Chances may be few and far between, but when one comes, it can deliver the adrenaline rush of a lifetime. The river is also home to beautiful wild rainbow trout. Achala Outfitters recommends bringing a 5-weight rod with a floating line in case you encounter a good hatch and have the opportunity to target rising rainbows.

During migratory trout season, Achala Outfitters fishes the Limay Medio and Limay Superior. The Limay River is a highly coveted fly fishing destination, and this program offers the opportunity to experience it at its best.

The minimum recommended stay is 4 days / 5 nights, allowing enough time to land one of these giants.

  • Shared room / shared guide — $4,725
  • Shared room / private guide — $7,322
  • Private room / shared guide — $6,525
  • Private room / private guide — $7,650
  • Non-angling companions are subject to the same rates

Activities for non-anglers are limited in Piedra del Águila due to its remote location. For parties with non-anglers, Achala Outfitters recommends fishing the Limay Superior to stay closer to Bariloche, a larger town and popular tourist destination.

Do I need a fishing license?

Yes. A Patagonia Fishing Permit is required. Achala Outfitters will obtain fishing permits for all anglers once passport information is provided.

Is there an opportunity to take side trips before or after my visit?

Achala Outfitters can connect you with a preferred vendor to assist with additional travel, including tours of Buenos Aires, trips to Mendoza to visit Argentine wineries, Iguazú Falls, and other destinations.

Side trips during your stay in Piedra del Águila can be challenging due to its remote location in northern Patagonia. Achala Outfitters recommends planning additional travel before or after your fly fishing adventure.

Can people with food allergies travel to Argentina?

Yes. Achala Outfitters can accommodate food allergies. Please provide this information as part of your guest profile so the team can prepare for your dietary needs.
