Arriving For Your Hunt

Plan for a day in the field with proper footwear and clothing suited to the season. Hunting boots and brush pants are highly recommended. For safety, an orange hat or vest is required; Vernon National can provide these if needed. We also have select gear available to borrow, as well as quality items for purchase in our Pro Shop. Guests may bring their own firearm and ammunition, or take advantage of our rental guns and ammo sales.

Warmup

Arrive early to sharpen your skills on the clays course. Options include a quick round of practice shots or a professional lesson with Vernon National Shooting Preserve-certified staff.

The Hunt

Choose a half-day hunt (3 hours) or a full-day hunt (6 hours with a short break). Guests may drive to the fields or enjoy a shuttle service provided by our staff.

After The Hunt

Relax in the lounge while your birds are prepared for travel, or use our cleaning room if you prefer. Browse the Pro Shop, enjoy the patio, or savor a catered meal arranged in advance — the perfect conclusion to your day afield.

The Land

Located in the rolling hills of central New York, near the top of Oneida County, Vernon National sits on an old family farm ideally suited for upland hunting. The property spans more than 600 acres, with an additional hundred acres leased from neighboring land. The varied terrain includes rolling hills, pine stands, hedgerows, old apple orchards, and hardwoods. Expansive fields are naturally divided by the landscape, with some offering spectacular views of the countryside.

Your Hunt

Each hunt is designated to one or more of our 20- to 30-acre fields, giving you plenty of room to work birds and pursue that one that got away. Cover varies annually and may include corn, wild grasses, sunflowers, and other natural habitats designed to provide excellent bird-hunting conditions.

Beyond The Hunt

While you’re here, plan to enjoy the many other sporting opportunities at Vernon National. During hunting season, our renowned Stone Fence Sporting Clays Course is closed, but you can test your skills on the original Ravine Course, winding along two deep ravines with a diverse set of challenging targets. Step onto the historic 5-Stand, where Vernon National first entered the clay shooting world, and be challenged by eight unique traps in a shaded woodland setting. For those looking to sharpen their aim, our pistol range remains open year-round and features numerous steel targets, along with opportunities to sight-in rifles out to 150 yards.
