The Story

Go fly fishing in the Saratoga Springs region of New York and enlist the help of Orvis-Endorsed guide Ralph Yusavage. Saratoga is 'the summer place to be.' A beautiful, historical 'city in the country,' we sit at the foothills of the Adirondacks, just to the west of the Hudson River. Centrally located, it's just a three-hour drive from Manhattan, Boston, or Montreal. Tourists have made the pilgrimage to Saratoga Springs for centuries, whether to enjoy the healing qualities of our natural mineral springs or to test their luck at our thoroughbred track (the oldest operating sporting venue in North America. If you've been here for our racing season you know how beautiful it is.

As Saratoga Springs' only endorsed guide, I'll pick you up at your hotel or bed and breakfast the morning of our trip with fresh, locally roasted coffee and breakfast snacks. From there, we will make the short commute (30-40 minutes) through idyllic countryside to where we put the boat in. You'll get individualized instruction based on your experience level. I love working with absolute beginners and I offer specific trips to accommodate. Ask about 'dark day' specials for my fellow racing fans.

April 1-July 4: We will mostly be targeting trout. The best dry-fly fishing of the season usually starts in May and lasts through early June.

July 4-Sept. 15: It's bass season! While there are opportunities to target trout, I prefer to target river small mouth bass.

Sept. 15-Oct. 15: As the fall sets in and the mercury drops, we get back to trout fishing. There can be some great action as the waters start to rise back up from their low summer volume and high temperatures.

Trout, small mouth bass, carp

Located in Saratoga Springs, we fish the southern Adirondacks to the Green Mountains of Vermont. The rivers are mostly small to mid-sized, with the Battenkill being our most famous.

Typical Weather:

In April, it is not uncommon to have snow on the ground still. It's best to be prepared for cool temperatures with an extra layer or two and a rain jacket. Waders are definitely needed.

By the time late May arrives the weather here starts to get great. Often times mornings near 50 and highs near 70 F. An extra fleece for the morning is usually all you'll need. You'll still want waders.

By mid July, we usually put the waders away until fall. If you've been here during track season, you know how great the weather is. Refreshing mornings and often pleasant daily highs, it's pretty rare that we go above 90 degrees or below 72 degrees this time of year.

Rates start from: $250 You can find all pricing information at:

What is Provided:

All rods, flies, terminal tackle, waders (upon request), drinks, snacks, streamside lunch on full day floats, pick-up and drop-off within Saratoga Springs. I also provide photos and video when requested, so you can leave your phone behind if you want and really get away from things.

Gear Recommendations:

Wet wading shoes, these can be wading boots with neoprene socks, a pair of closed-toed sandals, or an old pair of sneakers.

A pair of sunglasses, amber polarized is best.

Clothes and a hat to keep the sun off of you. I prefer lightweight, quick-drying long sleeves, long pant. Sunscreen works, too.

I prefer you use my rods, but if you insist on using your own, anything from a 3 wt. for small dry flies to a 7 wt. for large streamers can be of use. A 6 wt. will be your best overall choice.

What to Bring:

Any and all medications.
An optional extra change of clothes in case you happen to get wet. These can be left in the vehicle.

Q: What size groups can you accommodate?
A: Given the availability of qualified associates; I can currently accommodate groups of four.

Q: Can I bring my dog?
A: Sure! There's plenty of room in the boat if it is well- behaved. Typically, if two people want to fish from the boat though, I don't recommend it. However, if you're fishing solo and you don't mind my fantastically-behaved dog coming along, you'll go home with a few extra flies.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding guide and trip I booked Ralph through the Orvis Fishing School because I wanted to improve my skills on Euro-nymphing techniques and catch some fish at the same time. Ralph gave me the option up front to get a few fish "in the bag" by working on my current abilities of indicator nymph fishing. I opted for fish first and then found out that what I have been doing for years was causing me to miss a majority of strikes when fishing. Ralph explained and showed me how to rig up in a more effective way and I began to catch many large rainbow trout in just a few short hours. Our first day was a wade trip and the second day was a float trip. Ralph never stopped working to give the the best opportunity to catch fish and learn. He also instructed and critiqued me on my casting and general methods for Euro-nymphing. I have had many guides over the years from Maine to the West Coast and Ralph ranks among the best. I plan on coming back to fish with him next year and bringing my nephew.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The man knows his stuff Spent 2 days with Ralph and can’t wait until I can get out with him again. Knows his fly fishing more than anybody I’ve ever met. And knows how to find those sneaky little underwater prizes across multiple bodies of water. Plus, he’s a good guy who’s fun to speak with. 5 stars weren’t enough.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Half Day Fishing Ralph is great. I only had few hours and he went straight to work, putting us on fish with fairly tough water conditions. Ralph’s personable, knows his craft, and provides just the right amount of advice at the right time. I highly recommend him!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Killler Small Mouth float Ralph is a fantastic guide. My 16 year old daughter and I crushed bass all day. Ralph would say see that rock, bam fish, hit that shore line, bam fish. I actually lost count and stopped taking pictures. I would fish with him any day.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great time on the river with Ralph Ralph is an awesome guide and I can’t recommend him enough. I’m new to fly fishing and it was a great intro. Ralph was super patient with me and helped me improve my cast dramatically over the course of the day. And most importantly, we caught a lot of fish and had fun. I liked it so much I signed up for another trip with him right after we were finished. Definitely don’t hesitate to book a trip with Ralph.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful teacher, great bedside manner and fish! Ralph was great. Knew the spots, new the technique and knew exactly when the coach and when to let be! We got plenty of fish but would have been a wonderful experience regardless! Will definitely go out with him again!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Teacher! Ralph selected the Walloomsac river in North Bennington, VT. for us to fish. I am a novice fly fisherman and my primary goal was to improve my roll casting on the river. Ralph is a great teacher who freely imparts all his knowledge on how you should approach fly fishing in terms of tips of extending your cast, how to read the river and where upstream your fly should be to catch fish. Using his tips, I caught a rainbow trout and a brown trout during our morning fishing trip. I highly recommend Ralph as a guide. You will not be disappointed. I am looking forward to fishing with him again next year!
