The Story

Go fly fishing in Louisiana and enjoy the expertise of Orvis-endorsed guide, Michael Pittman. Just southeast of New Orleans, in some of the richest marshlands in North America, is a world-class fishery. Being a Louisiana fishing guide takes experience, skill, and most of all, passion. As a Louisiana native and lifelong fisherman, I’ve spent the last 15+ years guiding professionally. South Louisiana (SoLa) Guide Service grew from a love for fishing Louisiana’s waters. I specialize in saltwater sight fishing from Hopedale and Delacroix (the west side of the Mississippi) to Myrtle Grove, Port Sulphur, and Venice (the east side of the Mississippi). Sight fishing in the marsh is as much hunting as fishing, as you search for redfish, black drum, sheepshead, trout, and jack crevalle. Being a full-time, year-round guide allows me to stay in tune with the subtle changes in our fishery. Whether we’re casting a fly to a tailing redfish or stalking the marsh for finicky sheepshead, one of the benefits of fly-fishing Louisiana is our never-ending season. There is always something to catch in the marsh. However, while fly fishing is the primary goal on guided trips, I also provide light, conventional tackle for those tough days. I welcome anglers of all ages and skill levels, from first timers to seasoned veterans.

There is no need to bring any of your own fishing gear; we have everything you'll need. But if you'd prefer to bring your favorite fly rod and/or flies, you're more than welcome. Don't forget your sunscreen, polarized sunglasses, hat, non-marking shoes, food and refreshments for the day (water will be provided), Louisiana fishing license, and weather-appropriate clothing. In regard to accommodations, we work with multiple lodges, including all-inclusive options, and are happy to help coordinate or make recommendations.

We fish the waters of the Mississippi Delta, which hold an abundance of bait. It's rich with shrimp, mullets, pogies, and oysters, all of which our targeted species feed on. While we're based out of Hopedale, depending on the time of year and weather and/or water conditions, we will also fish Myrtle Grove, Port Sulphur, Venice, and Delacroix depending on which provide the best opportunity to have a successful day on the water.
