Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for learning the basics. This kit includes materials for flies covering a wide range of types to help you learn the basics. Plus, the patterns are actually tried and true flies which you can actually use. I even started making my own variations to suit my needs and I caught my first wild trout on a fly I tied, plus 8 more later that day. This is a great kit to learn how to tie.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Value Kit My awesome wife got me this kit for Christmas and it is fantastic. The quality of tools is great for a beginner set. The materials it includes are also high quality and should include extra once all the flies are tied. The DVD has well made videos that make the process easy to learn.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from By comparison the best in It’s price range. I am a 5 decade fly fisherman, starting at age 22 and I am now 72. I decided to tie flies to give me something to do during the pandemic rather than dream about fly fishing in places out of reach at the moment. I looked at fly fishing kits on line, and at a local outfitter. I consulted with a life long friend and fly tier and guide. Putting all that together this beginner fly tying kit was the best organized and set up to begin tying. It got me started. Once everything was out of the box and set on my desk, I began with the dvd included in the kit. Then and now I watch many videos on U Tube. Putting Orvis fly tying and Jack Dennis and such inputs in “search” was a beginning. I watched the videos repeatedly. I the decided on the Woolley bugger a logical place to start tying and watch various videos on how to tie them, learning from various approaches. I settled on one to guide me and tied my first for starting and stopping the U tube video as I progressed to the point of having the basic structure and steps down to do my fifth try without video guidance. And so it goes. I am making mistakes, and learning from them....

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for Starters While there are plenty of how to videos on the internet, this kit is a great starting point. It provides an easy to follow dvd and plenty of supplies to start tying with. You’ll have all of the essentials with some materials left over once you finish tying the 80 flies it includes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great kit I am a brand new fly tier and the flies I tied with this kit were my first. All of the materials needed to tie the flies listed were included and all of the tools worked as they should. The instructional videos were great and walked me though tying each of the flies. I accessed the videos through the Orvis Fly Fishing Learning Center instead of the DVD which was much easier. Also, I thought most of the patterns this kit came with were ones that I will actually use. My last note to anyone who isn't sure if they want to try tying flies: it is definitely cooler to catch a fish on a fly you tied yourself.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great starter kit As a beginner in the fly fishing sport, this kit is a perfect addition. The only reason for a 4 instead of a 5 is the DVD. I hope Orvis comes up with a more digital delivery mechanism for this great instructional content. Very happy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Encounter fly tying kit an excellent value I’m very happy with my purchase. I’ve already tied enough flies to cover the cost and I’ve only had it a couple weeks. The included dvd is straight forward and has some easy patterns I was able to tie on my first attempt. I’ll defiantly recommend it to my friends who are new to the sport
