Just Dropped: New Helios™ Colors

The Best Fly Fishing Gear & Clothing Shop In The World

Anglers like you have turned to our fly fishing gear and clothing shop to find the best rods, reels, apparel, and resources for more than 160 years. Our founder Charles Orvis developed the first modern fly reel in 1874, and we’ve been building on that innovation ever since. You’ll see our commitment to precision and care in everything we make, from the award-winning Ultralight Wading System to our Helios™ fly rods and the Carry It All bag Perk Perkins helped design.

Grab The Right Clothing & Must-Haves For All Fly Fishing Conditions

We offer the essentials to handle any water. You’ll find apparel, tools, and accessories for fishing anywhere, from cold mountain streams to tropical saltwater flats. Our fly fishing clothing and wading gear will keep you plenty comfortable, even in early seasons when the forecast flips from cold rain to wet snow:

• Zip into a wading jacket for fishing on crisp mornings and warm afternoons. When the temps start to rise, these layers are easy to remove and pack away.
• Our Sun Defense Shirts are your best friend for afternoons in full sun. They breathe so you won’t sweat through them, but they still cover your arms to block UV rays.
• For winter and late fall, you need fleece-lined waders. The warm seasons call for a pair that’s lightweight and puncture-resistant.
• Long hikes and slick rocks make it harder to get to your favorite fishing spots. A pair of grippy, top-quality wading boots keeps you upright on slippery rocks.
• Cap it off with a hat to shade your eyes and shield you from wind and rain.

Once you’re dressed right, stock your fly box with lifelike patterns. Our fly-tying tools, materials, vises, and hooks keep your hands busy in the off-season, but if you like to spend more time fishing than tying, we offer ready-made flies for every species and setting. Fool hungry trout and feisty tarpon with the buggiest styles for saltwater or freshwater applications. The fish won’t know who tied them, and we won’t tell.

Find The Fly Fishing Equipment New Anglers Need

The key to getting newcomers hooked is starting them off with the right tools. Every beginner needs this essential fly fishing gear:

• A rod and reel
• Line
• Leaders
• Tippet
• Flies and a fly box
• Forceps or hemostats
• Nippers
• A net
• Flotant

Grab a pair of polarized sunglasses, too. They protect your eyes and make fish easier to spot.

What about waders and boots? If you plan to start out fishing in the warmer months (or fish in a place where it’s always warm), you can get away with wet wading in whatever old sneakers you have. But you’ll eventually want to invest in quality waders and wading boots if you plan on fishing in cooler water.

If that sounds like a lot to sort out, let Orvis be your guide—introducing beginners to the sport is what we love to do. We offer a wealth of know-how in our Fly Fishing Learning Center, where anglers at every level can learn something new. You’ll find informative videos, podcasts, and articles on gear, techniques, and tactics, all penned and presented by Orvis experts.

Plus, our simple step-by-step Fly Rod Selector takes the guesswork out of choosing a rod. Just answer a few basic questions, and we’ll show you the options that fit you best. You can also learn how to choose the right tippet size or fly line, so you can contend with spooky fish with confidence.

Let Orvis outfit you for your next day on the water, whether fly fishing defines your life or you’re venturing out for the first time.
