The Story

There are times, particularly on western rivers when the water is a bit more rough and tumble and you need a more substantial fly to stay up on the surface. This big hair wing drake is just the ticket if the river is brawny and the trout are big. Color, Natural.

Size: 10, 12.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from a little disappointed.... This was a great fly I've been used this fly since 2016. This particular fly did give me a couple of the nice catch and some good memories of Trout. However, It seems like an Orvis company have changed their fly supplier. I ordered this fly a few weeks ago than I received it open the box and feel a little disappointed. It did looks like the shapes were bit changed. These flies almost look like a big caddis for me. I called Orvis and I tried to explain that. I even sent some pictures. The Orvis company send me the replacement very quickly. The Orvis company still gives us a very quick response and great customer service. I received the replacement after a few days. Unfortunately, The shape of the flies was still different from their web picture, and this time even worse. These should be the same #10 sizes but one of them the smaller than another one. I really appreciate their company's customer service and quick reply and sent me the replacements. BUT, The shape of the fly and the size of fly are really important for all any fly fishermen. I know all flies are not machine-made all hand made. So, I understand each flies could be slightly different but it passed the tolerance. Please beware! These flies might make you disappointed. If it's not, Please excuse this negative feedback. Thank you.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Take This Fly to Yellowstone NP This review is identical to the one I wrote for the Eastern Green Drake - If you are going to Yellowstone National Park, make sure you have this fly in your arsenal. The Yellowstone cutthroats found this fly to their liking in the Yellowstone River below LeHardy's Rapids (August 2019). Those trout would not bite any of my other fly patterns - dry flies, nymphs, and hoppers (which is a type of dry fly). But, the Green Drakes seemed to entice them. Why? I am not certain why; I just know the Green Drake flies did get them to bite when nothing else would. What about Grand Teton National Park? While I did not fish that park, I would recommend having a few Green Drakes just to be on the safe side. I plan to try the Green Drake on the Lower Saluda River, South Holston River, and Watauga River in the near future.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nicely Tied! Nicely tied fly! I would have given it 5 stars if it had been just a bit lower priced...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Quality! I'm not a Fly tier, so I buy all my flies and I love Orvis Flies in General, I've ordered other brands and not been happy. Orvis Flies hold up better, trip after trip where some of the cheaper flies I've bought don't last and are coming apart after 40-50 casts. These Western Green Drakes are excellent quality, symmetrical, all uniform size and quality materials.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Effective in Yellowstone This fly worked exceptionally well during September in Yellowstone. While it wasn't my best producer....it was a very worthwhile fly to have in my collection...I will be purchasing another dozen before going back to Yellowstone during that time of year.
