The Story

Heritage 1865 is a premiere wing-shooting lodge with 2,500 acres of beautifully preserved pheasant hunting grounds. Our family has been working and exploring every piece of this property for over 150 years and we pride ourselves in its care. The Ewing Farm is managed year-round to ensure great habitat for the pheasant and quail, who thrive here in the rolling hills and farm country of southeastern Iowa. The family, along with our experienced and friendly guides, train and hunt top-notch bird dogs including German Shorthaired Pointers, English Pointers, Brittanys, and Labrador Retrievers. Our guides make sure that every hunter who visits - whether a novice or an old pro - leaves happy! Beyond the hunting, our lodge offers first-class amenities such as a full bar, family-style meals from a local restaurateur, and rustic, comfortable accommodations. From dawn till dusk, guests will be treated with the highest quality care AND hunt the best land Iowa has to offer!

Orvis is pleased to offer our travel customers access to two valuable services: Global Rescue travel membership and IMG Signature Travel Insurance℠.

Sample of Typical Itinerary:

Each one of our hunting packages are set up to be customized to meet the needs of your trip. We offer anything ranging from a half day to multiple days of hunting. Each package usually starts around 8 a.m. for the morning hunt and 1:30 p.m. in the afternoon. Depending on the package you choose, times could be adjusted. We can also accommodate different physical abilities with shorter hunts or different terrain.

In the mornings, we start with a hearty breakfast served family-style in the lodge with your group. After that, gear up and head out for some great shooting with your guide and dogs. Stop back for another great meal, and then head right back out for the afternoon! In the evening, gather for dinner and drinks, and reminisce about the day with your guides and the Heritage team.

What is Provided to Customer:

Along with an unforgettable hunting experience, we provide a welcoming, full-service lodge that includes first-class comforts for relaxing after a day in the field. Stay in beautiful double-occupancy lodging, eat gourmet family-style meals from chef Tim Holmes (adapted from Grandma Judy's favorite recipes), and lounge around the fire at the end of a long day in the field with your favorite beverage from our fully stocked bar. Each hunting package includes guides, dogs, licenses, cleaning and packaging. We provide shuttle service to and from the Des Moines International Airport. We are also located about ten miles away from Iowa's second largest lake!

What Should Customers Bring?

Clothing
A good hunt can turn bad quickly if you bring the wrong clothes! We recommend dressing in layers for the most comfort. If you visit during the winter, consider bringing a base layer (top and bottom), sweater, fleece, brush pants or chaps, a coat, gloves, a hat, and of course – a pair of warm wool socks. Good waterproof boots are a must. Include blaze orange items (we have extra vests and hats available if necessary) and shooting glasses.

If you need any new duds, check out Orvis's gear through the links at the top of this page!

Give us a call before your trip to get an idea of what the weather will be like and for clothing suggestions.

Shotgun
Bring the shotgun of your choice. We recommend a fast-pointing 12 or 20 gauge. We also have shotguns available to rent. You'll be able to store your shotgun in the gun safe at the lodge.

Activities:

Heritage 1865 offers private, fully customizable wing-shooting hunts with guides and dogs for pheasant, quail, and partridge. Love whiskey? We'll stock the bar. Dietary restrictions? No problem – chef Tim will come up with something special. We take care of every detail from the minute you book to the minute you head home. We offer skeet shooting as well as deer and turkey hunts – all of which can be personalized to the same extent! We'd also be happy to take you fishing during your stay on our large, fully stocked pond with crappie, blue gil, bass, and catfish!

Species You Hunt by Season:

Upland bird
Chinese ring-neck pheasant, chukar partridge, bobwhite quail

Date Range:

Our pheasant, quail, and partridge season runs from the first of September to the end of March. Turkey season runs mid-April to mid-May. Waterfowl hunting trips are offered from early October to mid-January. Whitetail deer hunting trips are also available - contact us for availability. We are open seven days a week.

Region/Terrain Where You Hunt:

Our 2,500 acres of hunting terrain allows you to hunt flat or hilly fields in the beautiful farm region of southeast Iowa. There is a variety of terrain for you to choose from while hunting on our grounds - including corn fields, wetland sections, and forested areas. The vast grounds mean you can hunt wherever you would like - and we guarantee you won't be disappointed!

Typical Weather by Season:

Since our hunts take place the start of September and end at the end of March, we experience all 4 seasons (welcome to Iowa!). The weather conditions vary from 80 degrees to 10 degrees or below. The winters can be intimidating, but the adrenaline of your hunt will be more than enough to keep you warm. Plus, what's better than the frost on your breath, dog tracks on fresh snow, and the sight of a pheasant on the white sky? Reach out to us before you come hunt and we will let you know what type of weather you should be prepared for. A great rule of thumb is to dress in layers during the winter months - that way you are ready for anything!

Where is your closest airport?

Our closest airport is in Des Moines, IA (DSM), which is 70 miles north of the hunting grounds and lodge. We provide an airport shuttle for pick up/drop off.

Where can I stay if I hunt on your grounds?

We have a full-service lodge that sits on the family farm. The lodge is 1-2 miles away from the hunting grounds.

Are gratuities in price?

The gratuity is not included in the prices. That is based on personal preference for your guide.

How do I handle payment?

You will put a 50% deposit down to lock your hunting dates and then the rest of payment is due at the end of the trip.
