Rated 5 out of 5 by from An excellent introduction to fly fishing. Technically, I would give 4.5 stars for the 2 day school I attended in Milford Hills, Wi. If the facility had a stream, i would give it five stars. All three instructors (Craig, Donna, and Glen) were fantastic: knowledgeable, enthusiastic and fun! As a younger person, I was introduced to fly fishing and trout fishing specifically and I was an intermediate caster and fisher at best. So, after a 15 year hiatus from fly fishing, I thought this 2 day school would help me develop good technique and skills so that I improve as I resume fly fishing, rather than continue to be mediocre. One reason a stream or creek would be nice is to practice and instill good and safe wading techniques, that's the only con I can identify. Avoid the frustration of learning to fly fish and enjoy, attend one of these schools if you're serious about learning how to fly fish.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Experience I attended the two day fly fishing school in Kohler, WI. It was an unbelievable experience in every aspect. John and Ike were very knowledgeable and more importantly, excellent teachers. I came into the class with little to no experience. Although I’m still far from an expert, I’m also far from where I was before the class. It has given me the confidence and knowledge base to continue to pursue this wonderful hobby. If you can swing it, I would strongly suggest the two day class because it provides you with a lot more time on the water. On a side note, the catered lunch was amazing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Extremely informative I received this two day school experience as a gift from my kids and it will be one of the most useful classes I've ever attended. Ike and John were excellent in explaining and teaching the art of fly fishing. I feel confident in practicing what they've preached.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Punches All The Buttons Attended the 2-day school in Kohler. Ike and John, out instructors were great: thorough, encouraging but also constructive in pointing out opportunities for improvement. They covered the course curriculum well and with the right emphasis given the importance -- or not -- of the topic. They were flexible when heavy rain struck and managed the schedule well so we were able to get outside to apply what we learned. Kohler's River Wildlife was a great spot. The cabin classroom was a perfect, inspiring setting and the area made for a nice get away for the family while I fished. Given this was during the Pandemic, we also felt comfortable with the efforts of the Orvis and Kohler staff. While classroom teaching is absolutely necessary and the open field was a great "snag-free" setting for practice, nothing takes the place of actually fishing. I would have liked a bit more time in the river for real hands-on experience. It was great to be on the river with our instructors! Would I recommend it and do it again or take an Orvis Destination Trip: you bet.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Intro to Fly Fishing! I just completed the two day course taught by Ike and John. They were both great instructors: very knowledgable, experienced, patient and passionate about sharing what they know. The class was packed with information, but also had a perfect balance of classroom discussion and hands on practice casting, knot tying and fishing. The setting at Kohler could not have been better either. The classroom was in a beautiful log cabin with easy access to great water for practicing what we learned. The lunches were great as well. I am sure the one day course is also well done, but the two day gave us time on the river to bring everything we learned together. I highly recommend this class!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nothing short of AMAZING The two day school at Kohler with Matt Brush and Gordy Martin is nothing short of amazing. The have the unique ability to share their knowledge and passion in a way that enables students of any experience level to learn about the sport in detail AND learn how to cast! The setting/facility is a true gem; but Matt and Gordy make for a memorable and inspiring experience. A "must do" for any angler. Priceless. I'll make you guys proud!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Do the 2-day fishing school I have never fly fished nor had I looked into the sport, but Gordy & Matt made it very relatable. They're very good ambassadors for their sport: knowledgable, experienced (local & globally), enthusiastic, relatable, fun, relaxed, and conscientious of their environmental impact and the health of the fish population. I highly recommend the 2-day school. I couldn't imagaine trying to learn the basics in a day: equipment selection, casting techniques, insect entomogy/fly selection, knots, fish fighting, reading water, etc. The 2-day gives you a chance to really get a feel for casting. I could see major improvements on day 2 from day 1. We had 7 in our class with some having experience and others that were newbies. Classes are small size, so they sell out. 1 person said that he & his friend had tried the year before to take the 2-day class, but it was sold out. Class time was broken into 1-2 hours of "classroom" instruction/videos and then outside time practicing the different casting techniques on dry land with the instructors coming over to each student making suggestions/corrections. The 2nd day we, as a class, could decide between fishing in a pond or on the river. Make sure that you have your Wisconsin fishing license for the 2nd day. If the river is chosen then waders, boots, poles (Orvis H3 poles which will probably spoil me from all other rods), line, flies, etc were provided. We had at least 2 hours on the river. The "classroom" section is held in the upstairs loft of a cozy, rustic log lodge brought from Montana (I think) by John Kohler. Lunch is provided during the 2 days. I assumed it would be the typical box lunch: cold cut sandwich, piece of fruit, and chips. I was wrong. Lunch was provided on actual serviceware & cloth napkins by the very good River Wildlife Restaurant. Day 1: parmesan crusted walleye with rice blend and asparagus (Gordy & Matt said that this was NOT typical). Day 2: hot roast beef with tomato & onion and horseradish mayo on pumpernickel bread with a creamy coleslaw. Non-alcoholic beverages were free, but they had a full bar available for alcoholic drinks for purchase. Out in the field, water was provided. Overall a great experience that I would highly recommend!
