Rated 2 out of 5 by from Learned a lot but overall disappointed My wife and I were very excited to take the two day school but were disappointed with the experience We are die hard fisherman but new to fly fishing, my father took the same class years ago and still raves about how excellent it was this was not our experience. We learned a lot but and somewhat enjoyed it somewhat but for us it wasn't worth the time and money. First, this class is really for true beginners. I came in with some limited experience and day 1 was mostly a waste. I expected some redundancy to what I would learn but hoped they would give me more tips to improve beyond their exact itinerary but instead they moved on to other students. (My father was double hauling after getting basics down and they didn't mention it to me.) More importantly my wife (a true beginner) did not get the hang of casting even by the end of day two and might not fly fish moving forward. We asked the instructors for more help and they tried somewhat but end of the day, she has no confidence in casting after completing the school. Everyone was very nice, the facilities and content were excellent but absolutely left something to be desired. For example we learned tying knots on fly line (good idea,) but never had the opportunity to actually tie on a fly, we learned what flies to use shown on a screen but weren't shown the actual flies, only one person in our group caught a fish in the pond and there was almost no instruction on how to strike, fight or release fish, finally they spent as much time describing the cost of various Orvis items rather than giving a practical overview of what to do your first time in a stream. I'm extremely surprised to be writing a negative review and rarely do so. In hindsight my wife and I would have been better off watching some youtube, practicing and hiring a one day guide.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 2 Day is a MUST 2 Day course with my wife and we are hooked! Great facility and instruction, meals provided, great gear (FYI you will be learning on top of the line Helios 3 at time of this review) and well matched to different learning styles and skill levels. Highlight of day 2 was going out on the stream all suited up and fishing with different techniques and different flies. Not sure how much they include/skip in the 1 day but 2 days was full of useful info and instruction. Went up to the NH outlet and Orvis HQ weekend after the course and got a Recon, caught fish when we got home with flies tied from our arrives encounter kit. Dean and John were awesome and the video analysis was really helpful in my casting and seeing everyone else's too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Program We attended the 2 day program in May. The class size was small, just eight of us The two instructors were very knowledgeable. The classroom sessions were very informative, thorough and easy to understand. Casting sessions on the pond start with the basics of fly casting and progress over two days. There is plenty of individual instruction with time to practice on your own , more individual instruction, time to practice on your own and more individual instruction. Everyone is videotaped so you learn and see what you are doing right and what you are doing wrong and learn how to correct it. Time is spent on a local stream where you learn how to fish with nymphs, streamers and dry flies. This course is comprehensive and covers all aspects of fly fishing. You can watch videos and DVDs, however, you will not know if you are casting correctly unless an experienced fly caster watches you. Beginning fly fishers as well as those with some experience will benefit from attending this program. This was time very well spent. Many thanks to Mark and Bob our instructors.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Take this course! I am not going to bore you with my life story, but will tell you this, attending fly fishing school at Orvis Millbrook NY was one of the best things I have ever done! ( I am a 59 year old fisherman, new to fly fishing.) After this two day school along with two other students and instructor Bob Meyan, I can say that I wish I did this years ago, but thrilled I made the decision to do so now! I loved this relaxing, complete course and can't say enough about Bob with over 50 years of fly fishing experience! Everything is included (yes lunch too!). You spend equal time in the classroom, casting pond and finally, the stream! Instruction was presented in an easy to understand way, fishing techniques were carefully monitored and adjusted when necessary. You can spend hours upon hours with Youtube videos, learn bad habits doing this on your own, or do it the right way with a solid foundation of knowledge and technique, and start catching fish! Worth every penny!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from More than I expected...in every way. Truel, Tom, Forrest, Dylan...phenomenal instructors. I can't say enough great things about these guys. Their comments and instructions were right on target every time. The classroom is perfectly furnished and everything about the agenda ran smoothly. You never felt like you had some novice instructor reading off the slides during presentations. These guys know their craft...and well! I can't recall a single piece of information that felt insignificant or redundant. Everything about the course is top notch. We used top of the line rods, reels, and tackle. Sure...it makes your trips to the store across the street a little more expensive, but it's nice to practice and learn the skills on nice equipment and not beat up outdated stuff. As for the outcome of the course...I would wholeheartedly recommend the two day class to anyone considering the sport. I signed up without ever having held a fly rod and, although I have a lot to practice, I feel very confident that I can go out and employ a range of knowledge, skills, casting techniques, and tactics to land some real trophy fish. I can't imagine how they squeeze all of that information and training into a single day course...but I imagine that it's top notch as well. Personally, I think the two days is worth every bit of the time and money invested in order to quickly gain some of the knowledge and skills. We quickly, but methodically progressed through casting techniques. That was interspersed with classroom instruction on topics ranging from those casting methods, to entomology, to fish fighting skills and tactics, etc. Out around the ponds, we'd practice the various casts. There was just enough time on your own to work on the particular cast that was just demonstrated, then there'd be a welcome visit by one of the instructors to help tune your cast. Then back to practicing on your own...then another welcome visit to tune you up. I think it worked really well. And their feedback was technical, but understandable and consistent. The bottom line...it's a wonderful class. Since getting home it's all I can talk about. It's value is far beyond the money and/or time spent in two days.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best money i've spent since buying a rod. Having spent 6 months and countless hours on the water trying to teach myself to fish, I had the basics, but youtube has its limits. I caught 3 fish in 4 hard months on the river. Initially torn between hiring a guide or spending the money at the Orvis school, I'm so pleased I went for the school. I knew my casting needed some work, but I hadn't expected to get so much value out of the classroom sessions. Within a couple of hours, literally every question I had was answered. 1 day of schooling @ Millbrook and my days on the water have transformed. Every facet of my fishing has improved, from casting and fly selection, to finding fish and...even catching them! Yesterday I caught 5 wild trout. I have no doubt that I have the Orvis School to thank for that. A special thanks to Ben, my instructor, who helped me immensely. His knowledge and approach is really the reason I'm writing this glowing review. Thanks mate.
