Orvis Fly-Fishing Ambassador
Derek is a photographer, videographer, and author who is obsessed with exploring wild places (the more remote the better), and traveling the world seeking out new waters to fish. Derek finds there to be nothing more rewarding than sharing his passion with the fly-fishing community and helping others improve as anglers.
David is always thinking about fish—the where, the when, and, most importantly, the why. His analytical process (despite it being, as he describes, “sometimes torturous”) drives his thirst for exploration. He thrives on the challenging days—when the conditions become adverse and he’s forced to engage his mind to the true craft of guiding.
“There is something special about finding new spots and watching a fish eat your fly. This hunting-inspired method of fly fishing keeps me engaged and brings a smile to my face every time, successful or not. Some of my favorite moments have been just getting a particular fish to eat a fly and subsequently watching it get the better of me. The challenge and focus of finding a fish, sight casting to it, and getting it to eat allows me to be fully submerged in the moment. This is how I enjoy the wonders of fly fishing.”
Even more than fishing, Derek enjoys spending time in the outdoors with his wife and kids, be it on or off the water.
