Mom and Orvis-Endorsed Guide Kait Sampsel chats with mother-to-be Abbie Mahurin from our Pro Program about motherhood and how it influences our relationship with the outdoors.
Kait Sampsel grew up on a sheep farm in Canby, Oregon. Raised next to three older brothers, Kait quickly learned the value of determination and hard work. Guiding since 2009, Kait has broken barriers in Southern Oregon, becoming one of the only female fly-fishing guides in the region while being a mother, business owner, and working in sustainable seafood. Her strong work ethic and dedication to teaching Spey fishing well has earned her a place in the fly-fishing industry and created lifelong connections to her guests. Her reverence for the outdoors will always direct her way of being.
Kait is co-owner of Humble Heron Flyfishing, the CSF Program Administrator for Port Orford Sustainable Seafood, and the West Coast Editor for Swing the Fly magazine.
Abbie Mahurin is a musician, angler, and outdoor enthusiast. Working for Orvis for 5 years, Abbie manages the Orvis Pro Program, a grassroots marketing discount program for guides and industry professionals. Abbie is passionate about building community through fly-fishing and the power of nature as therapy. Abbie and her husband Andy love bluegrass music, travel, and fishing with their dogs, Bear and Winnie.
