The Story

Join Orvis and our endorsed partners at Salvelinus for an adventure tour in Spain, where you’ll enjoy a week of gourmet food and wine, culture, and fly fishing. The mountains, rivers, and valleys of the Spanish Pyrenees hold a unique opportunity for passionate fly anglers or anglers who want to enjoy a memorable trip with their non-angling travel companions. The combination of unspoiled wilderness interrupted only by quiet country roads and Romanesque hamlets will transport you back in time. Pristine, remote trout streams, expert fly-fishing guides, mouthwatering traditional cuisine, superb Spanish wines, and old-world hospitality are just some of the highlights of this unique adventure. Whether you choose to fly fish in some of the wildest landscapes in Europe or explore Romanesque villages, ancient monasteries, and hidden mountain valleys, this picturesque region of Spain will enchant you with its medieval architecture, scenic walled towns, and genuinely welcoming people.

Arén Lodge:

Arén Lodge is not just a traditional fishing lodge, but an intimate accommodation nestled in the 10th-century medieval village of Arén. Over the last three centuries, the family of Juan Antonio has been managing this “Fonda,” attending to travelers from all over the world. The lodge is located in the middle of an area that offers a large variety of waters with great fishing and great weather from March to November. The venue has six restored double-bed bedrooms plus two comfortable suites on the first and second floors. On the ground floor, there is a spa and wellness center (massage room, sauna, Jacuzzi, gym), a heated wader room, and an in-house fly shop. Meals are served at the nearby hotel restaurant, which is recognized as one of the most authentic hotspots in the region. The menu features local products and wines and is anything but ordinary. Traditional dishes are enhanced by a preference for organic produce, and everything is fresh and tasty.

Satellite Camp:

Two nights of the trip will be spent at a satellite location, which will be determined according to the fishing options. The satellite camp will be a four-/five-star hotel.

Day 1:

Depart Barcelona with a private ground transfer at 12PM. On their way through the Pyrenees guests will stop for a cultural tour followed by a local lunch. Once arrived, guests will be able to check in at the Aren Lodge which is in the city’s historical center. You will have ample time to relax and tour the property before welcome appetizers and a group briefing. Enjoy getting to know your fellow travel companions over a tasting menú for the welcome dinner.

Days 2-5:

After breakfast guests will have the option to participate in the activity of their choice. Based on your selection a guide will be assigned to help oversee your experience. Anglers and travel companions will have the option to meet for lunch or eat separately. At the conclusion of the day’s activity guests will have time to return to the lodge and freshen before dinner. Dinner will be held at the premise of XVII-Century Fonda, the lodge’s dining room.

Day 6:

Anglers & Travel Companions will visit a picturesque Spanish village to have a tour and wine tasting in a chateau at the oldest winery of the Pyrenees region. Private Michelin-star rated lunch and premier wine tasting in Somontano region. Overnight in Arén Lodge.

Days 7-8:

Two days of fishing for anglers or guided activities for travel companions from a satellite location. The satellite location will be a four-/five-star hotel. This will provide anglers the opportunity to access isolated waters.

Day 9 – Departure Day:

After breakfast, check out 9:30 am and ground transfer to Barcelona Airport or City.

PLEASE NOTE: The nature of adventure travel requires flexibility, so there may be changes to the itinerary in order to offer you the most diverse, interesting, and authentic experience possible. Occasionally, we may adjust the route or schedule based on fishing conditions and to respond to unforeseen events or special opportunities that were not formerly available to us. Rest assured we will do everything in our control to make your adventure extraordinary.

The Southern slopes of the Pyrenees include 17 main rivers, 118 tributaries plus a total of 2,512 lakes of glacial origin in the entire range. Verdant green valleys, high-altitude wildflower meadows and the majestic Pyrenees mountains provide a spectacular backdrop to great trout fishing in Northern Spain. You'll have opportunities to catch Iberian barbel, brown, rainbow, and brook trout in streams and lakes that can only be accessed with special permission, including several protected natural areas that are recognized as UNESCO Biosphere Reserves. The wide varieties of water see little pressure and are home to trout that do not see a lot of flies. At most of the freestones, 3 and 4-weight rods are suitable; bigger waters and mountain lakes call for 5 or 6-weight rods. Each month from March to November presents new and different opportunities for several species in a diverse range of fly-fishing scenarios. A great trip for the purist, the dry-fly fishing is exceptional!

Target species: brown trout, zebra trout, rainbow trout, brook trout, and barbel.

July: This is prime time for targeting a large variety of waters and species with dry flies. Water levels are generally very stable this time of year.

November: This is prime time for targeting big trout in some of the very best waters of the Pyrenees.
