The Story

Celebrating 30 years in 2022! Since 1992, Fly Fishing Outfitters has been serving the Vail Valley. We are a locally owned and operated, year-round, Orvis-Endorsed Outfitter and retail location in Avon, at the base of Beaver Creek Resort and just down the road from Vail. We are the only Orvis-Endorsed Guide service in the Vail Valley and a two-time winner of the Orvis-Endorsed Outfitter of the Year award.

This year we will be celebrating 30 years in business. We would not be here today if it weren’t for the incredible staff of guides and shop managers, many of whom have been here since day one. Our passion is connecting people with nature through fly fishing. We provide every client with a top-notch experience. Whether they are a first-time angler or have been fishing for years, we will match them with a professional guide and guarantee a safe and fun day on the river. Our guides have over 300 years combined experience on local waters. This year we will also be home to the Orvis Fly-Fishing schools since 2010.

Orvis is pleased to offer our travel customers access to two valuable services: Global Rescue travel membership and IMG Signature Travel Insurance℠.

Our Fly Shop:

Being located in the heart of ski country has its advantages in terms of the diversity of lodging and food options available, not to mention world-class skiing. Lodging options range from the Ritz to Comfort Inns. We are proud to have the lodge and spa at Cordillera, with 1.7 miles of private Eagle River access as our primary lodging partner.

Sample of Typical Itinerary:

Typically half-day trips consist of 4 hours of fishing, either wading or floating. Full days range from 8 to 12 hours wading or floating depending on where we fish. Full-day trips include a catered streamside lunch. Our guides are very flexible in putting together a trip to meet the expectations of our guests.

What is Provided to Customer:

Our trip pricing is all-inclusive: rods/reels, flies, transportation. A Colorado fishing license starts at $9 first day, $5 each additional day. All you need is a hat, sunglasses, and a smile.

What Should Customers Bring?

Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a rain jacket. We will take care of the rest.

Date Range:

We offer full-time year-round guide service.

Species You Fish for by Season:

Rainbow, browns, and cutthroat trout are caught year around. Bass and pike during the summer months. Our rivers are known for their diverse insect hatches: midges, mayflies, stoneflies (including the Colorado River salmonfly hatch in June), and a serious caddis hatch as well.

Region/Terrain Where You Fish:

We are permitted on the Colorado, Eagle, and Roaring Fork Rivers and their tributaries, as well as many small streams and stillwaters. We wade and float for rainbow, brown, and cutthroat trout. We also have a fully outfitted bass boat for larger stillwaters that have northern pike and bass.

Typical Weather by Season:

We fish year-round in the Vail Valley. Being in a high alpine desert elevation means that we have the ability to move down valley or up valley depending on temperatures. Colorado is known for its microclimates. Even during winter we are able to float and wade many of our rivers. Summer climates in the mountains range from mid-80s in the day to low 50s in the evenings. The winter climate can range from the 30s-40s in the daytime depending on what elevation we fish. Spring offers fantastic weather and great fishing opportunities that complement a day on the mountain.

Where is the closest airport?

Year-round flights into Eagle County Regional Airport.

Is gratuity included in the price?
