The Story

Year-Round Lowcountry Fly Fishing With Bay Street Outfitters

Located in the heart of historic Beaufort, South Carolina, Bay Street Outfitters offers world-class fly and light tackle fishing in one of the most scenic and productive saltwater fisheries on the East Coast. Conveniently positioned between Hilton Head, Charleston, and Savannah, Beaufort provides quick access to hundreds of square miles of tidal creeks, grassy marshes, and shallow flats.

Whether you're a seasoned angler or new to the sport, you'll enjoy sight casting to redfish, sea trout, cobia, tarpon, and jack crevalle from the bow of a shallow-draft flats skiff, guided by one of our experienced captains. We offer half- and full-day guided trips year-round, with the species and techniques tailored to seasonal conditions.

Fishing in the Lowcountry is truly a 12-month pursuit:

  • December–March: Focus on schooled-up redfish in crystal-clear low tide conditions.
  • April–June: Redfish begin tailing in the flood tide grass flats, while cobia, jacks, and tarpon make their first appearances.
  • July–September: Early morning and evening trips are best during the warmest months, offering exciting shots at a mix of species.
  • September–November: Ask any local angler—the fall is a favorite time for consistent action and cooler temps.

Bay Street Outfitters is also home to "The Redfish School," a specialized program designed for anglers seeking to advance their sight-casting and saltwater fly fishing skills. Whether you're chasing your first redfish or refining your double haul, our guides and instructors are here to help you succeed.

Founded in 1995, Bay Street Outfitters has called downtown Beaufort home for over 3 decades. Our shop is housed in the historic Lipsitz Building, a Beaufort landmark built in 1883. With its original heart pine floors and view of the Beaufort River, the space echoes the charm and heritage of the Lowcountry. Step inside, and you're likely to be greeted by the familiar scent of salt air and the warmth of a team that’s fished around the globe—but is always glad to be home.

From expert guidance and premium Orvis gear to unforgettable days on the water, Bay Street Outfitters is your gateway to some of the finest saltwater fly fishing in the Southeast.

Orvis is pleased to offer our travel customers access to two valuable services: Global Rescue travel membership and IMG Signature Travel Insurance℠.

Species You Fish For By Season

Redfish, year-round. Reds are fished for with 7-, 8-, or 9-weights and crab, shrimp, or minnow patterns, from flats boats on mud flats or wade fishing on grass flats. Cobia can be sight cast to from a boat from April 15 to June 15; it’s the only place cobia come inshore in such high numbers. Trout, ladyfish, flounder, bluefish, and jacks can be found in the summer.

Region/Terrain Where You Fish

Trips meet and depart from one of seven landings in Beaufort County. We fish from flats boats or wade the inshore marshland waters of the low country: Hilton Head Island and Beaufort, South Carolina.

Typical Weather By Season

Weather is tropical here but we still have all four seasons. The warmer months can have tropical thunderstorms but those are usually in the afternoon or evening. Winter provides great clear-water fishing on the low tide and generally doesn't have really cold temps. We fish year-round.

Where are your nearest airports?

Our nearest airports are in Savannah, Georgia or Charleston, South Carolina for commercial flights. Private planes can use Frogmore Airport on Lady’s Island. Historic Beaufort has great inns and restaurants right downtown.
