Species You Fish for by Season:

Smallmouth bass: These are among the most sporting of fish found anywhere and are the predominant species available on our lakes. They are best caught with 5- to 7-weight fly-fishing rods using poppers and other top-water presentations as well as streamers, Clousers and sub-surface flies (e.g. crayfish/leech patterns), Dahlberg Divers, Wooly Worms, Wooly Buggers, Marabou Muddlers, Deer hair bugs, Sculpins, Clouser Minnows, Gerbubble Bugs and small poppers, hook sizes, 2 to 6.

Trophy walleye: 8- to 10-weight rods with sinking line, fishing in 6-12 feet of water using leech patterns. These walleye reach record size (30 inches and larger) and are numerous on the lake system. Fish under 25 inches are uncommon.

Northern pike: These aggressive, fun to catch fish are found on many of our lakes. There are almost no conditions that prevent these fish from cooperating. Northerns vary greatly in size. Therefore, no single recommendation with respect to tackle can be made. On smaller pike up to 30 inches in length, 6- to 7-weight rods work well. However, if large to trophy sized northerns are on the menu, an upgrade in tackle is in order. In these situations 7- to 9-weight rods are required with top-water poppers as well as large pike streamers fished sub-surface. Dahlberg Divers, Muddler Minnows, Sculpins and colorful streamers in 1/0 to 4 with a short wire leader. Any of these or a combination of these flies are good choices for fishing northern pike.

Lake Trout: 7- to 10-weight rods with streamers. Early and late season (May and September) are the best times to target lake trout on the fly.

Date Range:
