Sample of Typical Itinerary:
Each one of our hunting packages are set up to be customized to meet the needs of your trip. We offer anything ranging from a half day to multiple days of hunting. Each package usually starts around 8 a.m. for the morning hunt and 1:30 p.m. in the afternoon. Depending on the package you choose, times could be adjusted. We can also accommodate different physical abilities with shorter hunts or different terrain.
In the mornings, we start with a hearty breakfast served family-style in the lodge with your group. After that, gear up and head out for some great shooting with your guide and dogs. Stop back for another great meal, and then head right back out for the afternoon! In the evening, gather for dinner and drinks, and reminisce about the day with your guides and the Heritage team.
What is Provided to Customer:
Along with an unforgettable hunting experience, we provide a welcoming, full-service lodge that includes first-class comforts for relaxing after a day in the field. Stay in beautiful double-occupancy lodging, eat gourmet family-style meals from chef Tim Holmes (adapted from Grandma Judy's favorite recipes), and lounge around the fire at the end of a long day in the field with your favorite beverage from our fully stocked bar. Each hunting package includes guides, dogs, licenses, cleaning and packaging. We provide shuttle service to and from the Des Moines International Airport. We are also located about ten miles away from Iowa's second largest lake!
What Should Customers Bring?
Clothing
A good hunt can turn bad quickly if you bring the wrong clothes! We recommend dressing in layers for the most comfort. If you visit during the winter, consider bringing a base layer (top and bottom), sweater, fleece, brush pants or chaps, a coat, gloves, a hat, and of course – a pair of warm wool socks. Good waterproof boots are a must. Include blaze orange items (we have extra vests and hats available if necessary) and shooting glasses.
If you need any new duds, check out Orvis's gear through the links at the top of this page!
Give us a call before your trip to get an idea of what the weather will be like and for clothing suggestions.
Shotgun
Bring the shotgun of your choice. We recommend a fast-pointing 12 or 20 gauge. We also have shotguns available to rent. You'll be able to store your shotgun in the gun safe at the lodge.
Activities:
Heritage 1865 offers private, fully customizable wing-shooting hunts with guides and dogs for pheasant, quail, and partridge. Love whiskey? We'll stock the bar. Dietary restrictions? No problem – chef Tim will come up with something special. We take care of every detail from the minute you book to the minute you head home. We offer skeet shooting as well as deer and turkey hunts – all of which can be personalized to the same extent! We'd also be happy to take you fishing during your stay on our large, fully stocked pond with crappie, blue gil, bass, and catfish!
