At LFFE we subscribe to Whitman's famous quote, “Now I see the secret of making the best person: It is to grow in the open air and to eat and sleep with the earth.” For the majority of our trips, we spend every night camped out under the stars. On an average trip, 12 participants and three trip leaders set out on adventures into America’s National Parks, National Forests, and State Parks. Sections of remote backcountry camping on the banks of secluded rivers and lakes are divided by time car-camping along some of America’s most famous trout water while we get cleaned up and resupplied. Hearty meals, prepared as a group, are finished just in time to hit the evening hatch. Tired and happy we gather around the campfire to reminisce before we retreat to our tents to sleep under a blanket of stars.
What is Provided:
We meet our participants at the airport on arrival day and everything is included until they return to the airport on departure day. All meals, lodging, fishing licenses, flies, and camping equipment are provided by Lillard Fly-Fishing Expeditions. We do suggest participants bring some spending money for souvenirs, the occasional snack stop, or to pick up some specialty flies at a local shop. A packing list specific to each trip details every piece of clothing and gear that participants must bring. A rental program is provided for certain items.
Gear Recommendations:
Detailed packing lists for each trip can be found on our website. Our groups travel in a 15-passenger van and we tow an enclosed trailer. We suggest participants pack in a large duffle bag. When we pack our backpacks to head into the backcountry for one to five nights. Unneeded items can be left in the duffle in the trailer.
What to Bring (Additional):
More important than what else to bring is what not to bring. Most importantly we do not allow cell phones. We encourage you to travel with your phone, but they are put into storage by the trip leaders as soon as you arrive and returned just in time to add all your new friends on social media before you depart. The opportunity for teens to disconnect and immerse themselves in the wilderness is an important part of the experience.
Season:
Our trips start as early as May 15th and continue through the middle of September. We also run winter/spring break trips during our off-season. All of our trips are planned to take advantage of the best fishing in each region. This means that we don’t plan trips in the West during the traditional runoff season or in Maine during the heat of August.
Species:
Our trips are predominately focused on trout with the addition of smallmouth and pike on certain expeditions. The species of trout we catch varies depending on the trip. Most trips have the opportunity to catch browns and rainbows, but one of the things that make our trips so unique is that each one of the regions we fish provide the chance to catch one or more native species. Think Yellowstone cutthroat in the Yellowstone backcountry, trophy brook trout in the Maine Woods, or greenback cutthroat in Colorado's high alpine lakes and streams.
Region/Terrain:
The amazing areas that we travel help make our trips the powerful experience that they are. The scenery is awe-inspiring, the wildlife is breathtaking, and one look at the water will make your heart race with excitement. Finishing your trip without a love and respect for pristine wilderness simply isn’t possible.
Typical Weather:
The best way to describe our weather is perfect for wet wading. Think warm during the day, occasional storms in the afternoon, and cool nights for sleeping.
Trip tuition includes everything from the second you arrive until the second you depart.
