The Story

Living Water Guide Service is an independent Orvis-Endorsed outfitter based on the Missouri River near Craig, Montana. Guiding is all we do — full time, on one of the finest tailwater fisheries in North America — and every decision we make, from the boats we run to the guides on our team, is made with one thing in mind: giving you the best possible day on the water.

Our guides are full-time professionals specializing in drift boat float trips, trout spey, walk-and-wade adventures, and jet boat access to the Land of Giants — a remote canyon section below Hauser Dam that holds some of the largest trout in the Missouri River system. We hold private access to this stretch through the Gates of the Mountains Marina, making us one of the few outfitters who can take you there. All skill levels welcome.

Highlights

  • Private access to the Land of Giants via Gates of the Mountains Marina
  • Missouri River tailwater — approximately 6,000 Brown & Rainbow Trout per mile
  • Drift boat and jet boat trips available
  • All guides are licensed captains with years of experience on these waters
  • All tackle, equipment, shore lunch, and non-alcoholic beverages included
  • Full and half-day trips available, rates from $600

Orvis is pleased to offer our travel customers access to two valuable services: Global Rescue travel membership and IMG Signature Travel Insurance℠.

We recommend 9' rods that are either a 5-wt. or 6-wt. for most nymphing and dry-fly fishing. When fishing streamers, we recommend 7-wt. rods loaded with sinking lines.

Region

The Missouri is formed at the confluence of the Madison, Jefferson, and Gallatin rivers, near Three Forks, Montana. Fly anglers are most interested in the Land of the Giants section below Hauser Dam and the famed blue ribbon stretch beginning below Holter Dam. The Missouri River system is a thriving tailwater, boasting approximately 6000 fish per mile and prolific insect hatches.
