Gear Recommendations:

Fly rods: The most common are 9 foot, 5- or 6-wt. We always recommend bringing extra rods, 5-, 6-, or 7-wt. You will fish different kinds of water, from the small rivers in the Highlands to big lakes where a 7- or 8-wt. would be helpful.

Fly Lines: Weight forward floating to match your 5- or 6-wt., sinking lines, shooting heads, or full sinking for your heavier rod.

Leaders: 7½ ft., 2X and 9 ft., 3X, 4X diameter. For tippet materials, use 2X, 3X, 4X, and 5X.

Flies: You will likely use a variety of dries, nymphs and streamers throughout the week. You'll receive a detailed list after booking. Flies are available at the Highlands Lodge.

Following dinner, you can relax, or go back out to fish some more. On day two you will continue to fish in the Highlands region.
On the third day you will enjoy breakfast at the lodge and leave to fish around 9:00 a.m. You will again be fishing Kaldakvísl or Tungnaá River, on a stretch you did not fish the two days before. Following fishing you will your guide will drive you to the next stop on the trip, Hótel Grímsborgir. Once you arrive, you will have the chance to settle into your room and freshen up before dinner.

Days 4 and 5:
Your first full day at Hótel Grímsborgir you will enjoy breakfast at Hótel Grímsborgir and then will fish Lake Thingvallavatn, the largest lake in Iceland or another lake in the area. The group will reconvene at Hótel Grímsborgir for dinner.
Your last full day of the trip, will be a full day of fishing a different beat on Lake Thingvallavatn or another lake in the area.

This is the last day of our trip, but it does not need to be the end of your adventure. You will have breakfast at Hótel Grímsborgir, after which you can take a shuttle to the airport to catch your flight home or onto your next destination. If you wish to extend your stay at Hótel Grímsborgir, that can be arranged as well.

You’ll stay in two different locations over the course of this trip.

THE HIGHLANDS LODGE

Completely renovated in 2018 and just a few minutes from much of the great fishing in the region. You will undoubtedly see fish rising each evening in the water surrounding the lodge. Each morning will start with a coffee, tea, and breakfast served in the dining room before you head off for fishing on the local waters. The lodge has an equipment drying room, six double occupancy rooms (each with two twin beds) with a closet and sink, a dining room, a living room, and a shared bathroom with two large showers and three toilets.

HÓTEL GRÍMSBORGIR

Just 55 miles from Reykjavik but located in the center of Iceland’s Golden Circle. Its setting makes it an ideal place from which to explore the natural wonders of the country. Your package includes a room with two twin beds or a large kind bed and a private bathroom. The rest of the group will be in the same building, which shares two hot tubs on an outside deck, while the dining will be at the restaurant/bar area located in the main building.

Surrounded by an extremely rugged, volcanic landscape, Iceland’s rivers and lakes are home to native Arctic char and brown trout. Below the water’s surface, abundant bug life and baitfish help the char and trout thrive, resulting in impressive fish density and in many places, remarkable size. All rivers and lakes in Iceland have restricted access to help protect the fisheries from over-fishing. Fish Partner has one of, if not the largest, portfolio of leases to access some of the best fishing around the country. Whether you have dreamed of catching Arctic char in a crystal-clear river, or chasing the legendary "Ice Age brown trout" of Lake Thingvallavatn, you will have the opportunity on this trip.

HIGHLANDS REGION

The rivers in the Highlands region of Iceland are filled with both brown trout and Arctic char. Many stretches of river have long stretches of riffles and pools, punctuated by waterfalls with deep blue canyons that hold trout and char deep below rocky banks.

LAKE THINGVALLAVATN

is home to a unique subspecies of brown trout that have evolved in isolation since the last ice age. The lake is fed by thousands of springs that keep the temperature consistently around 38°F year-round. The stable temperature and abundance of food results in extraordinary brown trout. It is not uncommon for anglers to catch fish well over 10lbs., and each year much bigger fish are brought to the net!

Fish Partner has access to some of the most coveted beats around the lake. You may fish the mouth of one of the many springs, cast from cliffs overlooking where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet just under the surface, or from a black sand beach to cruising fish. No matter the beat, you are sure to have your heart race if you hook into one of these prehistoric beasts! The lake is also home to four unique subspecies of Arctic char.
