The Story

Ourano Pointers was born from a young boy's passion and dedication to the Pointer. As he grew up, he found that the most challenging and elusive quarry to test his dogs on was the grand Greywing Francolin - and thus a long-standing love affair and adventure began. Merging that very same young boy's love for his culture and food, wild places, breathtaking views, and of course, the special Greywing and his dogs, an intricate dance began. To pursue the Greywing Francolin in these wild mountains is unlike any other game bird offering on the continent; the birds are wild, elusive, regal, and survivors bar none. Crops and cultivated lands do not attract them, and only truly exceptional dogs can find, handle, and present them to the gun in these vast, high-altitude highlands.

Walking in the highest point in Southern Africa, in an untouched wilderness littered with the liquid staircases of the mountain streams, is an experience on its own. All of the food served is sourced from the very mountains we walk daily, and live in, making it truly local and sustainable. Our staff is all local too, with job creation close to our hearts here, and with an intimate knowledge of the surrounding mountains and slopes. It all came together in a melting pot to prove how one can live life on their terms, while making a difference to lives enriched through the offering, as well as not selling out to worldly pressures.

Due to the remote nature of our location, guests generally stay on our historic National Monument and classified Heritage Site. Our base of operation offers 7 en suite bedrooms with Oregon pine floors, large fireplace, and 5-star quality linen and bedding. The main building is made up of the 7 bedrooms enrobed in the classic Sir Herbert Baker style, large sandstone blocks, and is purely for guests. It is situated on a 7.5 acre property where horses roam, and our special dogs are reared and developed from puppies. Wifi is available on the property and at the guests' rooms for real-world communication, a daily laundry service is offered, and a separate dining hall and bar/lounge completes our historical property and lodge - serving as the heartbeat for all of our gatherings and guests.

Breakfast is served in the dining hall before making our way up into the top flats of the mountains in our capable and well-maintained vehicles.

Our famous Ourano field lunch is served in the field, somewhere high, remote, and breathtaking.

We hunt the day until our daily bag limit of 5 Greywing per hunter is achieved, before sundowners and snacks are enjoyed somewhere scenic, before heading back down to the lodge for a drink around your private fireplace, a shower, and lastly dinner and leisure time around the dining hall.

Fly fishing is offered on wild rainbow and brown trout in the mountain streams and headwaters in the wild trout capital of Africa. We also offer the Royal Macnab to those who would like to challenge themselves further.

Shotguns and fly fishing gear are available to hire.

The mountains that we call home and make a living in make up the highest point in Southern Africa. We hunt alongside the wild Lesotho border at around 10,000 feet in altitude. These highlands and untouched mountains are an isolated wilderness in that they are home to a select few animal and bird species that survive but also thrive, as well as an array of rare flora populations found nowhere else in the country. The wild trout populations are legendary and have cemented the area as the wild trout capital of the continent. The vast, wild, beautiful afromontane ecosystem is truly unique in that it occurs nowhere else in Southern Africa.

Our rates start at $800/$850 per hunter per day, and our dedicated fly fishing rates start at $650 per guest/angler per day. We have a combined special of $1350 per hunter/angler/guest per day, as well as a special 6-night package at $6500 for both Greywing Francolin over our world-class Pointers and some fly fishing. All rates are inclusive of three daily meals, all drinks and snacks, accommodation, transfers around the hunting areas, and laundry services. They do not include firearm rental, fishing gear rental, ammunition, taxidermy requests, extra hunting or fishing days outside of the agreed-upon itinerary, and gratuities for any working staff members.

What sort of weather can one expect?

It is very cold in our winter months, with a year-round temperate climate, so good quality and layered clothing is advised, as well as comfortable socks and boots. Our rooms are well-equipped for the cold winter nights.

How many Greywing Francolin can I shoot daily?

The daily legal bag limit per hunter is 5 Greywing per hunter.

Do I require any medication and or vaccinations?

No, nothing of the sort is required, as it is a colder climate, and there aren't any issues present.

If I have any dietary restrictions or allergens, is this an issue?

We encourage all of our guests to communicate these aspects to us in good time so that we can make the necessary adjustments to our menus and ingredients and best accommodate you as possible.

Can I charter in instead of the 5-hour shuttle transfer?

Yes, this is an extra option that can be arranged at a private airstrip where we will pick you up and bring you through to the lodge via a +- 2 hour drive.
