The Story

Rocky Mountain Outfitters is a four season fly-fishing outfitter providing float and wade fly-fishing trips. RMO is the only outfitter with a fly shop on the Provo River. Blue-ribbon trout fishing is within walking distance of our shop. RMO is located next to the Provo River, which contains over 3,000 fish per mile, with large BWO, PMD, green drake, caddis, and stonefly hatches. We are also located close to many small streams that contain wild trophy brook, rainbow, and brown trout. We cater to all levels of anglers.

Sample of Typical Itinerary:

The day will start by meeting at our shop located on the Provo. At the shop you will be met by your experienced guide and be outfitted with waders and wading boots. After you are comfortably outfitted, you will depart with your guide to access the river that you will be fishing. If you are fishing for a full day, a lunch will be provided and prepared by a local deli. Our trips consist of no more than 2 clients to a guide. Most trips are done on the Provo River. There are numerous waters to fish in Utah that require a little more driving but are worth checking out. Half-day trips average about 4 hours on the water. Full-day trips are approx 7 hours on the water, and float trips about 5-6 hours.

What is Provided to Customer:

We provide waders, boots, rods, and flies on all trips. Lunches are included on full-day trips and can be made available for half-day trips.

What Should Customers Bring?

Dress according to the weather and season. Utah is known for crazy, unpredictable weather, but if you are prepared, we can handle any situation. Heavy socks are always recommended. Sunscreen, hats, and lip balm are also recommended, but we have them all at the shop if you forget. Also, never forget your camera!

Date Range:

Rocky Mountain Outfitters is open year-round.

Species You Fish for by Season:

Rainbow trout, brown trout, brook trout, and cutthroat.

Region/Terrain Where You Fish:

Wasatch Mountain Range in Utah. Elevations from 4,500 to 6,500 feet. The Provo River offers great wade fishing and float trips on the lower section. There are a lot of fishing access points for fishing the Provo River, and the average flow on the middle section is about 500 cubic feet per second (cfs), the lower section is about 400 cfs.

Typical Weather by Season:

Spring: Spring in Utah is a great time for blue-winged olive (BWO) mayflies. Overcast skies and rain are not uncommon. These conditions are prime for BWO hatches.

Summer: Summer is a season that produces large pale morning dun (PMD), caddis, and terrestrial hatches. This season is often dry and warm and offers a very comfortable day of fishing.

Fall: Fall can offer the perfect weather for fishing, with crisp mornings and warm afternoons. Fish are aggressive and looking for extra calories before winter. Fishing in the fall might be the some of our guides' favorite time to fish. Consider the fall fleece weather.

Winter: Winter brings colder temperatures, both in the air and water. If you are willing to dress warm and drink hot chocolate, the fishing is still productive.

What insects are in the fishery?

Blue-winged olives, pale morning duns, midges, caddisflies, green drakes, and stoneflies.

How far is the drive?

Up to 20 minutes.

What kind of fishing techniques will we use?

You could be fishing with nymphs or dry flies, depending on the conditions.

Brown, brook, and rainbow trout.

How long have you been guiding?

Since 1986.
