The Story

Choose Orvis-endorsed accommodations at San Huberto Lodge for your fly-fishing adventure in Argentina. San Huberto was founded in the mid-1970s, a couple of years after Carlos and Carmen Olsen were married. This was, indeed, a working cattle ranch, owned by the family since 1890...so here is where our legacy comes from.

Carmen and Carlos were suggested to turn this legacy and tradition into a formal and serious business, for our location was (and continues to be) an unbeatable goal for avid anglers in search of quality and pristine fishing.

Decades have passed and San Huberto Lodge has become one of the finest lodges for anglers around the world, nowadays run by Carlos and Carmen's sons Ronnie and Gustavo and daughter Karin. They have achieved their ambition to preserve the traditions of the Olsen Family and at the same time, to offer innovations in technology and comfort.

San Huberto Lodge offers accommodation for up to 16 persons in six double rooms and four single rooms, one of those adapted to welcome handicapped guests. However, our policy is to welcome a maximum of 12 rods at a time, so that the lodge may be full if there are non-anglers lodged at same period. Our experience has taught us to hold and respect this maximum for the comfort of every guest in the river and for environmental benefits, which is reflected in the quality of our fishing.

Orvis is pleased to offer our travel customers access to two valuable services: Global Rescue travel membership and IMG Signature Travel Insurance℠.

Bedrooms have private full bathrooms with showers and all kinds of amenities such as hair dryers, robes and slippers, safety box, telephones with IDD / AT&T service and high speed WIFI service available at no extra cost.

A spa area next door offers jacuzzi and sauna service free for all guests. Massage services are available upon advanced request at extra cost (prices may vary according to kind of therapy and time of session booked).

Our laundry service works 7 days a week and offers washing and ironing service on a daily delivery basis.

Although there is no formal room service, our goal is also to provide anything our guests may need, from buying medicine in town to send champagne to the room before midnight. It is one of our devotions to let our guests enjoy their stay without any concern, for they can trust we will always take care of any detail or request. Other tourist services can be also handled upon request: we work with a network of remarkable service suppliers which enables us to satisfy any specific request.

Finally, San Huberto Lodge has a private runway inside the ranch, about 10 minutes drive from the main building. Operation conditions may be requested if planning to book a charter (jets are not able to operate into or out from these facilities).

Food & Drink

Our meals need a special chapter, for our kitchen is the heart of the operation and boasts most of the traditions of the Olsen Family. We use centennial recipes for sausages or cold meat, as well as some special desserts like the wonderful Vasque Cake.

Our home production of organic red meat through our grass lands and the cattle we raise, in the most natural way possible, makes our rib eye and bife de chorizo a delicacy to try.

We also have a productive organic vegetable garden, full of herbs, greens, beans, peas, cabbages, beetroots, carrots, radish and much more. These finely-cared-for fresh vegetables come directly to our kitchen every day for the enjoyment of our guests, family, and staff.

Our Sunday asados is itself a real feast. Late afternoon Ronnie Olsen himself lights the fire and starts with this nearly "ritual": a sumptuous barbecue carefully prepared for hours until guests gather at the barbecue house around 9 pm. Different meat cuts can be tasted like at no other asado in the area. Lamb, pork, veal, sausages and blood sausages are part of the menu, as well as an assortment of salads, not before trying a couple of fried "empanadas" with some good malbecs as a premiere of the show to come.

What to Bring:

Comfortable clothing and comfortable shoes! This is a must.

During cocktail and dinner time, casual elegant is the usual dress code.

Bring some cash in small notes for tipping. US dollars are welcome almost everywhere.

Don't forget your medicines and, just in case, bring a recipe from your doctor for additional medicine to buy. If you have any specific health issue, do not hesitate to hand a medical resume to the lodge and/or the guide. Also inform your health insurance service and number.

Season:

Official fishing season lasts from November 1st to May 31st. However, San Huberto Lodge's policy is to respect the traditional fishing season, starting on the 2nd Saturday of November until late April.

Wild brown and rainbow may be caught all season round.

Species:

Most rainbow and brown trout live and prosper in the Malleo river and some other environments near San Huberto. You can expect to catch no less than 40 fish per day, from very small ones to 21/22 inches, with an average 17/18 inches, couple of 23 to 26 inches can be caught and rarely a 27 to 30 inches.

Fishing at the nearby Tromen lake may differ.... we use motor boats to fish the lake but not trolling. We strongly encourage sight fly fishing there and rewards don't take long. Beautiful big rainbow and brown can be caught, and some brook trout as well. It is a great experience you must try at least once.

The Alumine river is another environment close to San Huberto Lodge. Indeed, a 1-hour drive will lead you to the coast of this larger river, available for wading and floating. The special time comes when freen worms hatch appears. Nice catches can be expected while the great experience is the scenery you can enjoy throughout this fluvial valley, a unique geography compared to the rest of the rivers from glacier origin.

Region/Terrain:

Our lands are vast and varied so much that you may find wetlands, mountains, rocky peaks, volcanoes, upper plateaus with no vegetation and much more. Indeed, Patagonia has been drastically influenced and carved during the 4 different eras that we know.

The orogenesis of the Tertiary was so brutal that there were sudden eruptions and the Andes chain was born. Explosive volcanoes also mottled the surface and old rocks came up to the surface while lava literally "cooked" part of it.

The Ice Age played its part too.... almost all our lakes, valleys and rivers were originated here...

As a result, there is an overwhelming landscape out there to enjoy every single day. We are blessed to live here all year round and it is our deepest pleasure to share it with our visitors.

Typical Weather:

Rough lands, rough weather sometimes. But not always. Patagonia is Patagonia and winds are almost a permanent feature. However, we are not located at the roaring fifties' area...not at all.

Strong rain and snow starts mid-May and can last until late October. November and December are more stable while our summer and fall are almost 100% dry.

The "Ni'o" climate phenomenon usually influences our weather too. So, if you are planning a fishing trip to Patagonia, you should always bring a rain jacket, a couple of thermal first skin clothing and a polar vest or sweater. You can experience a rather cold morning in January and enjoy a sunny hot afternoon at 3 pm same day, with 35°C.

2023-2024 Season & Rates:

As previously described, San Huberto Lodge will always take care of all your needs and expectations, so we encourage you to tell us what you would like to do while staying with us.

One of our highlights, apart from fishing, is the chance to join authentic and breath-taking horse riding journeys. There are half-day and full-day trails for you to enjoy and admire the landscape from a different point of view.

Our neighbour Lanin Volcano is a permanent invitation to trekkers and mountaineers. There are several options to approach this marvellous Andean peak: soft trekking to the base, a daily strong trekking to the refuges, or attempting the top on a 2 or 3 day excursion with certified guides.

Photo shop clinics can be organized for you to learn and cpature the most exciting scenarios of Patagonia. There are thousands of unique chances round the corner at San Huberto Lodge!!!

Finally and as part of our Olsen Family Outdoor devotion, a brand new lodge in the north of Argentina offers dove and pigeon hunting from late March to early October, managed by Gustavo Olsen and his own family. If you'd like a "cast & blast" package, do not hesitate to try that during April. There are awesome combinations to join,
