The Story

Willowfly Anglers is an Orvis-Endorsed Fly-Fishing Outfitter / Fly-Shop located in Almont, Colorado at Three Rivers Resort, where the East and Taylor Rivers come together to form the Gunnison River. This geographical location puts us in an incredibly central location to many rivers, streams, reservoirs, and natural lakes. The diverse fly-fishing opportunities in our area keep our valued guests coming back for generations.

We have been in operation since 1983 and employ the most experienced, talented, and safest guides in our area. Each guide is a true professional, who cares about sharing their passion with each guest. A day spent on the water with our guides is a special time to learn, enjoy the beautiful outdoors, and walk away with lifetime memories.

The resort offers a variety of lodging options, including cabins on the Taylor River with private fishing rights. Whether you are coming with a larger group, or looking for a quiet getaway, there are lodging options to fit varying needs and budgets. Our summertime Smokehouse Restaurant offers superb meals and a bar in a casual patio setting. In-house smoked meats and tasty BBQ top off a great day on the water.

In addition to fly fishing trips, the resort offers casting clinics, guided spin fishing trips, guided whitewater rafting trips, guided kayak trips, and a general store with basic grocery items. Join us in Almont to see why our guests return every year to this truly special part of Colorado!

Our fly shop is open seven days a week from May through October, but during the off-season it is always accessible when the resort's General Store is open. We take pride in being a friendly, knowledgeable shop with no secrets. Whether you are brand new to fly fishing, or a seasoned expert, we can help you get the gear and flies you need and point you in the right direction.

We operate fly-fishing trips year-round. Springtime can offer great fishing pre-runoff, but weather is variable year-to-year. Crowds are typically thin during spring, leaving the rivers peaceful and open.

Summertime is our peak season. We have great hatches of mayflies, caddis flies, stoneflies, and midges throughout the summer. Dry fly fishing is common from July through September, but we do employ other techniques as well including nymphing and streamers.

Autumn is a wonderful time to fish in the Gunnison Valley. As the leaves begin to change colors, Kokanee salmon make their spawning run upriver from Blue Mesa Reservoir. Angling for trout and salmon can be fantastic in September and October.

Winter can be cold and snowy here, but we are fortunate to have access to the Taylor River "catch and release" section, downstream of Taylor Park Reservoir. This tailwater can fish well throughout the winter for those willing to fish in winter conditions.

The Gunnison Valley is well-known for the variety and sizes of our trout: rainbows, cutthroat, browns, brooks, and cuttbows. We also have the nation's largest landlocked Kokanee salmon run from late August through November. Anglers flock to the area each fall for some fun salmon stream fishing. Check our website for frequent updates and fishing reports for the area.

Willowfly Anglers offers walk and wade and float trips daily in the summer. Walk and wade trips are available all year upon request. The resort is located at an elevation of 8,027 feet and most stream locations will not exceed 9,000 feet in elevation. The resort is easy to find, right off of a main county highway and at the entrance to Taylor Canyon. We fish a variety of waters in the valley, including small streams, larger rivers, and even lakes. Our optional private waters offer the best of the best'private fishing ranches and clubs'as well as our own stretch of private water on the Taylor River reserved for our guests.

Typical Weather:

The weather in the Gunnison Valley can vary greatly in one day. It is not unusual to see temperature swings of 40 degrees F or more in one day and it can snow any day of the year. However, during the busy summer season, you can expect highs in the upper 70s and sometimes 80s while lows can dip into the 40s. Winters can be downright frigid with many daytime temperatures barely reaching above zero. The spring and fall months will fall somewhere between the winter extremes and summer temps.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great fly shop! When I fish in a new area, I always visit a local fly shop to get tips on where to fish and what flies to use. The first time I stepped into Willowfly Anglers, I met Jay Hill who worked at the shop. Jay was very helpful in talking with me about good places to fish and what flies to use. The first thing I noticed was his enthusiasm in sharing this information. It felt genuine in that he really wanted me to have a successful day on the water. He drew a map of a couple of places where I should fish and encouraged me to come back to the shop to let him know how I did on the water and that he'd draw another map and make fly recommendations for my next day of fishing. I did just that and have continued to do so for several years since first visiting this fly shop. All of the shop staff are incredibly helpful and no question about fly fishing is a dumb question. I have learned a lot more about fly fishing based on the time that Jay and all of the staff have given, showing me fishing tools and flies, as well as sharing fishing technique tips. I have a file full of maps that Jay and the staff have drawn for me over the years. I highly recommend this fly shop to fishers of all levels!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Staff I have taken a couple of guided trips with Willowfly as well as I attended their Guide School in 2020. I have had the pleasure of meeting and fishing with several of their guides and found them all to be very personable and knowledgeable of the waters. Bottom line, I always had a great time. Also, the fly shop staff is very helpful and always have what I need for a day on the water. They are my "Go To" shop in the Gunnison Valley.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gunnison Kokes Are No Jokes My wife and I decided to spend our 25th anniversary at Three Rivers Resort with a full day guided wading trip from Willowfly Anglers. Eric was our guide and met us at the fly shop. He did a great job of asking us what we were interested in getting from the trip. Based on our answers, Eric lead us to the Gunnison River and within a couple casts, my wife hooked up to a nice brown. After several nice trout, Eric suggested another spot up the river. We waded in to a spot that were stacked with Kokes. My wife hooked in quickly and caught her first Koke on a fly rod! Eric then taught me some streamer tips and I was off. Soon after I hooked up to a small trout on my streamer. After many trout and Kokes it was time to go and we were reluctant to end the day. Thank you Eric and Willowfly Anglers for making an awesome 25 year anniversary.
