The main difference between a blanket and a throw blanket is size. A blanket is large enough to cover the entire body or a bed. Throw blankets are smaller and often decorative, intended to “throw” over the shoulders or lap for added warmth, or across the arm of the sofa as an accent blanket.
The warmest type of throw blanket is woven from a sturdy natural fiber like wool or cashmere. Sherpa fleece also makes for a very warm throw blanket.
The best fabric for a throw blanket depends on purpose and preferences. At Orvis, most of our throw blankets are made with dog owners in mind—washable, warm, and protective while giving pets a comfortable spot to sleep.
Throw blankets are good for sleeping if you don’t need full coverage or if you need only a bit of extra warmth for your legs and feet. But they’re a great option for napping since they’re smaller than full-sized blankets.
Curling up under a warm wool blanket or soft fleece throw won’t fix all your problems—but add a fire pit and a snoozing dog, and it’ll come pretty close. Our throws and blankets are made to be comfortable and travel well, from home to car to camp. Grab a roll-up throw with a carrier for streamside picnics or road trip adventures. Defend your furniture with dog-proof protectors and blankets that block dirt and fur while giving your pet a warm spot to sprawl. Our quilted throws stay in place, no matter how many circles your dog takes to settle in. Soft, durable, easy to pack—these blankets add warmth whenever you need it.
