The Story

The best portable rod rack we've ever seen. Four super-secure suction mounts stay attached to the car even under extreme high-speed driving conditions (not necessarily recommended. Adjustable mounting positions with ball-and-socket connections offer infinite mounting options. Attaches to all nonporous surfaces and stays attached with four independent lever-lock suction mounts. Ball and socket connections and vertical pivots provide unequaled flexibility to mount to any passenger vehicle. Additional ball and socket connection in the rod rest allows rods to be level. Rods held in place with double shock cord and rest of thick EVA foam. Made of the highest quality materials with glass-filled nylon base, rod rests, and socket. Polycarbonate-ABS suction mounts and stainless-steel hardware.

Nickel rings for strap assembly. PVC suction mount pads.

Also available with a super-strong magnetic attachment option.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sumo Car-Top Rod Carrier I bought this recently at Orvis as my old one was at the end of its life. I looked at this Sumo one which looked well made and very adaptable to fit my vehicle. It was exactly that, easy to attach to car, very secure at 60 mph., rods take seconds to fit and it looks great. Very pleased with my choice and would recommend it to all anglers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Rack I purchased the suction cup option to replace my Sumo magnetic rod rack, as my new F150 has an all aluminum body. I've had the magnetic version of the Sumo for close to 10 years and they have never failed me. Used for Spey rods, switch rods, trout rods.....didn't matter. All are held solidly even at speeds of 55mph. Thought about just replacing the parts, but 4 suction cups plus shipping is almost as much as the entire rack. Better off having 2 options for future trips/vehicles.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from More. Time. Fishing! I used this for the first time two days in a row last weekend for two fly rods. It was easy to set up, adjust, and take off the car before hitting the highway home. I traveled on bumpy, pot-holed Forest Service gravel roads in the mountains between fishing spots going up to about 40 mph on gravel with no problem, drove on a paved road at about 55 mph with no problem for about 25 miles then back to the gravel roads. Saved so much time and hassle! All last summer I had to break my rod down in between fishy waters and then put it back together. This time I just took the rod off the Sumo and went right to fishing. I did put a reel cover over the reels (the neoprene ones that came with the reel) to protect them from any flying rocks and from the dust, but that's the only modification I made to Sumo's package. I also made sure I had a bottle of water to rinse the dust off the car and I packed a small towel in a Ziploc baggy to wipe clean areas so I could mount the Sumo easily (the suction cups need a clean smooth surface), then put the wet dirty towel back in the baggy. At the end of the day, I broke down the four parts of the Rod Rack and stored them back in the original box and headed home happy. I recommend reading the instructions and putting the Rod Rack together at home once so when you're out fishing, you don't have to learn how to do it, and can spend More. Time. Fishing!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pricey but solid as a rock on the car! These aren't the cheapest car-top rod racks, in fact they are just about the most expensive, but they are solid when fitted to the car and you need that confidence if you are entrusting your expensive rods for safe transit. The racks are easily fitted and removed and are simple to use when in place. Ball joints make positioning of rods easy and the elastic bands to secure the rods are simple but reliable. almost entirely plastic which is why I haven't given five stars but then plastic is less likely to scratch the paintwork.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best way ever! Sumo rod carriers are the absolute best way to transport your fly rods. Simply lock the Sumos down, put the rods in place and secure the bungee cords and you are on your way! No more breaking the rods down to fit in the back of the SUV. No lost time setting them up when you reach your destination. Best buy ever!
