The Story

Mid-price anglers, your fly rod has arrived. With Recon, you get high-performance feel, lightness in hand, close-in loading ability, and the power for longer reach, and—thanks to H3 construction techniques—improved accuracy. And you get it all at an affordable price. Recon is the rod designed for the anglers who chase blue lines on topo maps and spend their nights bent over maps, plotting the next day’s adventures. For those who manage riverside meals of granola bars and jerky paired with the evening hatch instead of a sit-down meal at a sane hour. For anglers who would rather spend the day in the front of a skiff than behind a desk, we’ve created a rod ready to work as hard as you do in the pursuit of fish.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good upgrade I'm fairly new to fly fishing, i mostly do tightline nymphing. Compared to the 2 wt clearwater that i upgraded from, this rod feels more solid, more stiff. For me this is helpful for casting accuracy. I'm not sure if there is a huge difference in sensitivity over my clearwater. The finish is definitely better. Will it help me catch more fish? Probably not.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love my new 10ft 2wt Recon I already have the 6ft 6” Carbon Orvis rod and love it for Brook trout. Was looking for something to do a little more Nymphing in these smaller creeks and this 10ft 2wt is ideal. Great feel, easy casting, especially roll casting given tight areas too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great rod for Stillwater application too The Orvis Recon 102-4 fly rod review is based on 20 trips that encompass alpine lakes and reservoirs. A chief reason for the purchase was to target stocker rainbow trout and small alpine fish with a light weight fly rod. The fly rod can cast my size #8 to size #12 dry and wet flies nicely. Although I’m comfortable with casting the 2 weight fly rod in light to moderate wind, most anglers might prefer a heaver weighted fly rod for windy conditions. As with any potential fly rod purchase, it is a smart move to cast the fly rod at a fly shop and formulate your own opinion. I agree with other comments regarding the rod’s ability to play larger fish. The fly rod handled two 20 inch lake trout that I successfully netted last season. During the netting process each time, I was able to point the rod tip up in the air and get the lake trout’s head out of the water. The fly rod is suited for playing smaller fish but can handle a big fish in a pinch. Because of the tube’s height of 34.5 inches, a larger backpack is necessary to secure the tube for backcountry fishing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Euro Nymphing Rod As I am new to Euro Nymphng I started with an old 9ft 6in #6, I found it very heavy and not very sensitive for the task so decided to get a rod built for the job. I have only used this Recon 10Ft #2 twice but the first impressions are great, it is so light, casting and feeling what is going on at the nymph end is a revelation over what I started with. I chant wait to get it out again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super sensitive rod! Love the new Recon design! This is my 3rd Orvis Recon rod. The price point, warranty and performace are outstanding. I love the fact this is an American made product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Work horse I looked and looked for a review online about this rod and couldn’t find one which surprises me bc it is definitely a fantastic rod! So I decided to get my option on it. I have used a lot of different setups to nymph with started tenkara rods then with Helios 2 10’ 4wt, then went to hardy ultra light zeph. 9’9 2wt, then Winston super 10x 3wt and now currently fish a TNT contact 10’8 3wt. This rod won me over the second I took it on the water. But I wanted something to replace my hardy 2wt for smaller fish and smaller water it just wasn’t a euro stick and didn’t do what I needed it to do. I was hoping that the Helios 3 had a 2wt but Since they didn’t I looked at the recon 2. Mind you I don’t fish to many midpriced rods anymore I truly believe you get what you pay for. Well this little rod definitely blew me out of the water! Now is it as sensitive as the TNT? No not quite but it also isn’t a rod in that same price point. For the price point you get WAY more rod then others out there. It’s super soft and throws light rigs that my TNT has a harder time throwing but also has a reserve that helps land better fish. Iv hand no problem landing 15inch fish on it, now you definitely get a good fight as you should but it handles the nicely. it truly is a work horse of a rod, I wouldnt hesitate to tell someone to pick one up and to be honest I’ll be fishing this one for a long time. Another win for Orvis no doubt

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very diverse After fishing it for a few weeks I was surprised of how adaptable this rod is. I have used 4x thru 6x flora tippet, cast double rigs across water seams and hauled in big fish quickly.
