Double Gun Bird Hunts - Steve Grossman

Overview

Wild Birds...Wild Places - These are the words that best describe our South Dakota bird hunts, which take place out of Whitehorse, SD, on more than 100,000 acres of Native prairie, coulees, draws and river bottoms west of the Missouri River. Steve Grossman's Double Gun Bird Hunts offer guests opportunities for 4 species of game birds: sharptail grouse, Hungarian partridge, greater prairie chicken and pheasant...all wild birds in wild places. There's a sea of habitat offering a lifetime of bird hunting, making Double Gun Bird Hunts/Wild Prairie Lodge a world-class bird hunting destination.

Hunting wild birds in their native habitat can be a great challenge, and we tailor our hunts personally to meet the desires of our guests. We are all about the traditions of fine guns, great bird dogs, and a true reverence to the sport; it's not about the taking of game, but how the game is taken. We like to think that we offer "hunting the way our fathers and grandfathers hunted." There are no vans or shuttles here, nor are there big fields of hunters: it's 2-3 guns per guide, or perhaps the single hunter wanting to experience the solitude of the prairie. Hunts take place through the bulk of the season, though Steve focuses on grouse and woodcock hunts for the month of October at his Little Moran Grouse Camp facility in Minnesota.

"Steve (Grossman) does it right. He knows what it takes to run a first-class wingshooting operation—from the food, accommodations and overall ambience to the guides and dogs. He also understands the peculiar challenges posed by an operation that relies exclusively on wild birds. Double Gun Bird Hunts has developed such a loyal following through the years that the only way a new guest gets a foot in the door is to come as a guest or to wait until older hunters retire or kick the bucket..."
