Upon arrival in Punta Gorda after a 1-hour scenic flight over the coastline of Belize, you will be met by a Copal Tree representative who will transfer you to the lodge. Your Orvis host will greet you there and help you gear up for the fishing days ahead while you settle in to the lush jungle surroundings. Your fishing guide for the week will meet you there as well and go over the fishing plan for the next morning.
Fly Fishing for the elusive Permit. After a full breakfast, anglers will take a short Land-Rover ride to the marina and join your guide there. You'll spend each fishing day exploring the most productive areas based on conditions, while learning more about what it takes to target Permit on the fly from some of the most experienced guides in the business. Non-anglers will find plenty of guided and non-guided activities to choose from back at the lodge, with different options planned for each day. After each fishing day, guests will return to Copal Tree Lodge with enough time to relax before dinner, go for a local hike or bike ride, or kayak the Rio Grand right on the property. Members of the group can dine together at a common table or enjoy a table for two with candlelight.
Guests will be transferred from the lodge to the Punta Gorda Airstrip to catch a 1-hour flight back to Belize City based on your international departure time.

Aside from fishing, Copal Tree Lodge has a well-organized activities schedule and some of the best trained guides in Belize. There is always something to keep everyone as active as they choose during their stay. This Belize adventure tour has something for everyone. SPA Copal Tree's Jabulani Spa's hand-carved wooden water feature and rock fountain help bestow a sense of tranquility throughout the spa. The structure, which was inspired by traditional Maya homes, features Belizean hardwoods harvested from hurricane-damaged trees and sustainable wood farms. A covered outdoor terrace leads to a spacious treatment area with floor-to-ceiling glass walls offering an unrestricted view of the rainforest canopy. The spa's interior walls are adorned with approximately 70,000 natural stones, which reflect the surrounding environment and complement the oversized waterfall shower. Situated in the tranquil tropical forest, surrounded by sensuous scents and sounds, you can enjoy exotic treatments that incorporate rare, local, organically produced Belizean ingredients including chocolate and orange, copal and lavender oils. These oils are made from local natural ingredients by two Doctors living in one of the nearby villages. Copal Tree's Spa Therapist uses the local oils in her massages and facials. Other spa treatments are also offered using only locally made salts and oils. These treatments include: full manicure, full pedicure, mani-art, and pedi-art. Appointments can be made at the front desk.
There are a variety of activities available and they are operated by trained guides using the adventure lodge's own well-maintained vehicles and boats. Permit are the stars and by far the most likely object of your fly fishing desire while staying at Copal Tree Lodge. The flats, lagoons and river channels around Copal Tree are among the best permit fisheries in the world. The largest fish are found from March through May, but ample numbers are found year-round.
Tarpon: Large tarpon are migratory and are found in the waters around Copal Tree from May through September. Smaller tarpon, less than twenty pounds, can be found in the mangroves and brackish estuaries, creeks and lagoons year-round.
Bonefish: The flats, lagoons and river mouths attract bonefish, but not in the same numbers as in northern Belize. We suggest you combine a stay at Copal Tree Lodge with a fishing lodge to the north if you are new to flats fishing.
Snook: Coastal marine and brackish mangroves offer the best snook fishing from November through March.
Jack Crevalle: Thriving in the area since the 1995 commercial net ban, large schools of jacks are found in the shallow flats and lagoons around Copal Tree from February through November.
Mutton Snapper: This coveted species is found year-round in the sandy areas around mangroves, lagoons and river basins.
Copal Tree Lodge is really the only place in far southern Belize where you can explore the tropical forest or fly fish and enjoy luxurious accommodations and gourmet food. It is surrounded by tropical nature both on land and at sea. This Belize adventure lodge is situated on a hillside above the Rio Grande in a 12,000 acre private reserve, where you can observe tropical birds in the canopy, and adjacent to the Port of Honduras Marine Reserve, one of the best places in the world to catch permit on a fly rod.
The climate is subtropical. Summer temperatures seldom exceed 96°F and winter lows are rarely below 60°F. The rainy season is between June and October, and the dry season is from February through April, however rain can occur all year round.
What else to bring?
- Lightweight rain gear for tropical showers
- Light jacket or sweater for cool mornings and evenings
- Light quick-dry shirts, shorts, and pants for protection from the sun or mosquitoes
- Wide-brimmed hat for protection from the sun
- Walking/hiking shoes or boots, flats boots or water shoes, sandals/flip-flops
- Sunscreen and lip balm (SPF 15 or higher)
- Insect repellent
- Camera, batteries, plenty of memory or film, and lens cleaner
- Small waterproof bag for carrying extra gear
- Sunglasses (polarized for fishing)
- Snorkel/diving mask
- Personal medications
- Binoculars for bird watching All visitors are required to have a valid passport that does not expire within 90 days of arrival, along with a return airline ticket. Visas are not currently required for travelers from the U.S., European Community, or British Commonwealth.
Many anglers prefer to have a 9-10 weight rigged up for permit. A 10-weight rod is also perfect for most Central American Tarpon fishing. Fly rods in the 7 to 8-weight range are the ideal size for Belize bonefish. Reels should be anodized, corrosion-resistant saltwater models that will hold a full fly line, plus approximately 200 yards of 30-pound backing. Reels equipped with smooth, high-quality drags are essential to prevent break-offs from the blistering runs of hooked fish. A weight-forward, saltwater floating line is ideal for most of the sight fishing you will encounter. There are times when an intermediate clear-sinking or sink-tip line is the answer for tarpon and snook fishing.
