The Story

Go fly fishing in Alaska and join us for Orvis Week at Intricate Bay Lodge (IBL). This is the ultimate Alaskan experience: six nights' lodging and five days' guided fly-out fishing. Every day you'll fly to a new location to fish waterways that can only be accessed by plane. Needless to say, the views, the fishing, and the memories will be unforgettable. You'll arrive at Iliamna airport early Saturday evening, and you'll be met by an Intricate Bay staff member. We'll load your gear into our van and take a short drive to our seaplanes. After the planes are loaded, you'll skim across the lake and climb into the magnificent Alaskan air for our short flight to Intricate Bay Lodge. When you pull up to the dock at IBL, you'll be met by our amazing guides. Staff will drop your gear in your rooms and acquaint you with some of the lodge's very basic rules, AKA don't feed the bears. Your first evening will be spent relaxing and getting to know the guides as well as the other guests. You'll enjoy dinner, a few drinks, and lots of laughs while taking in some of the most beautiful views anywhere in the world.

The meals are well balanced, so you needn’t feel guilty when you devour the homemade bread, delicious pastries, and gourmet delights served with each lodge meal.

Intricate Bay Lodge was entirely rebuilt in 2015. The new facility has been constructed with no expense spared. This operation caters to only ten guests at a time and prides itself on providing an intimate, personal, and quality experience in the heart of Alaska’s Bristol Bay region. With fantastic fisheries nearby such as the Copper and Gibraltor, along with fly outs to all the favorites like Moraine, American, Talarik, and others, you can expect to fill your stay with fantastic fishing while enjoying the luxury of new accommodations at a lodge you can nearly call your own. The facility itself sits on the shores of Lake Iliamna. With fantastic views of the lake from the stunning deck, which includes a wood-burning hot tub, you will quickly see why owner/operator Brain Harry has so much passion for sharing his place with others.

September is probably the best month in all of Alaska to go after trophy trout. While the weather can be constantly changing, this is when the largest numbers of big lake rainbows come into area rivers. The fish know this is their last chance to pack on weight for the long winter ahead. The rainbows are still extremely aggressive toward salmon eggs and will chase a flesh fly with reckless abandon. In fact, they are willing to gorge themselves on just about anything you pass in front of them.

How Many People On This Trip?

Ten anglers.

Skill Levels/Experience

All skill levels are welcome.

How Strenuous Are The Activities?

Moderate. Float and light hiking while wade fishing.
