The Story

Enjoy luxury accommodations at Orvis-endorsed Rio Piedra Plantation on your Georgia wingshooting adventure. Why has the bobwhite captivated hunters for over a century? Perhaps it's the adrenaline rush at the first humming of a covey bursting upwards from the golden wiregrass. Perhaps it's the challenge of the shot as they missile into the skyline of the Longleaf pine forest. Perhaps it's the nostalgia of experiencing a sport long revered in America and that hasn't changed in over 100 years.

Annie and Bill Atchison opened Rio Piedra Plantation twenty years ago and their son, Sam and his wife, Beth have since joined the operation. When asked why their guests return year after year, it's simple—it's real hunting. Many consider the 1950-1960s era as having been the peak for bobwhite quail in South Georgia. It's not. It's now. Habitat restoration efforts in recent decades have brought the birds back in the Plantation Belt—a narrow strip of land between Albany, GA and Tallahassee. Quail move freely between the vast private plantations here. And there is only one option open to traveling wingshooters—Rio Piedra Plantation. In fact, Rio Piedra is the only Orvis-endorsed lodge located in the Plantation Belt. The hunting here is as it was 50 or 100 years ago. The quail here aren't merely shot, they are hunted.

When the hunt is over, even those not yet under the spell of the bobwhite will surely enjoy relaxing in our beautiful, classically decorated lodge, and guest rooms. Guests consistently highlight our relaxed 5-star cuisine as remarkable. Chef Dirk, our European trained chef, offers a wide range of upscale entrees. Guests enjoy all meals in our lodge, along with a variety of hors d'oeuvres and a self-service, open bar after the hunt, all of which are included.

Plan your escape to our serene longleaf pine forests ready to make memories with customers, family or friends—all in the heart of Georgia's quail tradition.

Your Rio Piedra experience begins at our two-story main lodge featuring vaulted ceilings, grand stone fireplaces and distinguished furnishings. As you enter the lodge, you'll notice the wrap around porches and patio. Guests linger here with picturesque views of the Flint River and the surrounding longleaf pine forest.

Make yourself at home in one of 10 Lodge rooms or four nearby guest cabins. Guest rooms feature fine furnishings and are well-appointed with private baths.

All meals are enjoyed at the main lodge amongst multiple dining areas which can accommodate both large groups or smaller private parties. Please see the dining section for more about our relaxed 5-star dining.

After dinner, relax at one of several fireplaces in and around the Lodge. Put your feet up, gaze up at the stars and savor memories of the day.

The lodge includes a Pro Shop stocked with logo souvenirs, hunting accessories, and Orvis apparel. Also available is our shooting platform with two throwers—complimentary for guests.

Rio Piedra Plantation hosts guests from mid-October through mid-March. Please consult our website, call or email for the beginning and ending dates for each season.

Wild bobwhite quail have been hunted here in Southwest Georgia, the Quail Capital, for well over 100 years. In the wake of the Civil War, families acquired large plantations, creating expansive hunting estates that today comprise the South Georgia Plantation Belt. Over the last hundred years, these mostly-private plantations committed immense resources to preserve and restore the vast longleaf pine forests that serve as quintessential bobwhite quail habitat. As a result, the region now boasts wild quail populations that are at historic highs. Knowing Rio Piedra borders some of the region's largest and most celebrated plantations, it's no wonder Rio Piedra provides quests with unparalleled quail hunting.

This region of deep South Georgia has always been known as the Quail Capital of the world. The land consists of gentle rolling terrain and pine savannah'a relatively open longleaf pine canopy and wire grass ground cover. "The Flint", a beautiful free-flowing river, bisects the plantation and provides a gorgeous backdrop as you take aim with either gun or camera. Knowing guests will hunt different areas each morning and afternoon, there is ample opportunity to experience various parts of the plantation. And there is sufficient hunting acreage to cover different terrain every day for two weeks.

Typical Weather:

Quail hunting is a fall and winter sport. That often means shirtsleeve hunting by afternoon, but a crackling fireplace feels good after the sun drops. Mornings are cooler. You will want to bring some kind of outerwear for the ride out to the hunting areas on-open air jeeps.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing overall experience Are you kidding? If I could give Rio Piedra a 10 on a 5 scale I would. Great guides and dogs. Good flying birds. And just spectacular grounds to hunt on. The overall experience is world class. From the owners/operators to their staff; to the lodging and dining experiences - probably the best I’ve ever experienced on any hunt/trip of this type ever. I’m already planning to take some clients here next fall on a few trips, plus a trip with my family.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Experience! My husband and I took our son for his 21st Birthday here. It was his wish to go hunting and what an experience we had. We all were very impressed with the quality of the accommodations and the Lodge was decorated with great taste and amazing space, especially now with this pandemic they made sure we were comfortable and socially distanced from other groups. The dining choices were nice and the quality of the food delicious (whole wheat croissants and blueberry scones! yum!) The bar has great choices for a cocktail and the wine selection was decent. Also, the cigars are not bad we did enjoy a couple by the terrace with a bourbon on the rocks. The staff is super friendly, respectful and attentive to your every need. We had a class the day before our hunt and the trainer Mickey was on time and patience with the newbies.... Our Hunting guide was Chas and he was fun, knowledgeable and always making sure we were safe. Birds were plenty, after one day of hunting we came back home with 40 they cleaned and packed them ready to travel. We recommend this place to anyone that wants to hunt in style! We are already talking about dates to go back!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bird Hunting At Rio Piedra Plantation My friends and I just spent 2 days hunting at he plantation. This place is special from the first person that treated us till the time we packed up and head down the dirt road. The meals were extremely good, the accommodations were excellent, the staff were great. But we came for the hunting and that was the best. The guides were personable and in my two days of hunting they were hunting with there dogs. Watching the dogs hunt was a great experience and getting to shoot plenty of birds was a bonus. Sam and Beth were great host and have something special going on at the plantation. We will be back and I will tell my friends they need to make plans to go in the future. We could not have had a better time. David
