There are times when world news or just the rigors of everyday life can seem extraordinarily stressful. At Orvis, we believe in the power of nature to replenish our spirit and restore balance to our lives. So, we urge you to take a little time right now to step away from the stress and … Chill.
THE HUM OF WINGS
The Calliope hummingbird (Selasphorus calliope) is the smallest bird in the United States, measuring just three inches in length and weighing about as much as a ping-pong ball. The species inhabits the Rocky Mountains from British Columbia south to Baja, nesting as high as 10,000 feet above sea level. In winter, they migrate south to Mexico and Central America. A hummingbird can beat its wings up to 80 times per second, and its heart can beat more than 1,000 times per minute. Contrary to popular belief, hummingbirds don’t suck nectar from plants, but lap it up with their forked tongues.
