The Story

Western New York has a long tradition of providing some of the best world-class steelhead fly-fishing opportunities in the country. Our guide services specialize in providing patient instruction to the novice or the expert while creating lifelong memories. Imagine sight fishing and swinging flies for these chrome beauties while walking along some of the most beautiful unpressured streams in the East. Most of our steelhead streams are minutes away from our home and that allow us more time on the water and a short trip back to our nineteenth-century farmhouse for a wonderful home-cooked lunch after our trip. We encourage you to bring your friends, family members and/or business clients so that they can share these special memories with you. We envision each trip as an opportunity to build a lifelong relationship and we make sure to do everything we can to address your needs and expectations. Please check our website for more information, and images.

Your guide has been an Orvis-Endorsed Guide for around two decades and is also a renowned artist whose work is in over 20 museum collections and is regularly featured in national fly-fishing magazines. He is the founder and director of a youth fly-fishing program as well as a distinguished professor. These qualifications have made him an interesting and patient teacher and guide who is passionate about sharing his love for steelhead, fly fishing, and nature.

Region/Terrain Where you Fish

The terrain we fish varies dramatically from small to medium-sized rivers. Decisions on where to fish depend on water condition, the client's skill level, the client's preferences, and the location of steelhead pods. We generally drive to our locations and walk down to the creek and wade. Sometimes we can just walk out our front door and fish in our backyard for steelhead. We have around around 10 steelhead streams of various sizes with in a 25-minute drive from our house.

Typical Weather by Season

Weather for steelhead fishing in our area can vary dramatically depending on the time of year:

October can provide changing leaves along the stream with mild temperatures between 40 and 60 degrees. This is usually peak time on Cattaraugus Creek due to the minimal to moderate rainfall we receive. Smaller streams are usually starting to get some runs of steelhead.

November is usually our peak part of the season with temperatures usually between 30 - 50 degrees. From mid-November to early December, most steelhead streams have received plenty of good runs of steelhead.

December is generally a good time to fish, with plenty of steelhead in the streams and temperatures between 25 - 40 degrees. Steelhead are coming close to their peak spawning time, after which they will begin to move back into the Great Lakes.

January sees fewer fish in the streams, although we still have moderate numbers of fish. Temperatures usually range between 25 - 35 degrees. Guide trips are scheduled tentatively during this time due to water temperatures. On good days, fish are eager to take your flies and you will rarely see anyone on any streams.

February typically has the same temperatures as January with fewer fish in the stream.

March brings the beginning of the spring runs of steelhead with temperatures between 30-50 degrees. By the second or third week in March, we are getting good pushes of steelhead moving into the streams.

April brings more runs of steelheads with temperatures between 40-60 degrees.

May brings warm temperatures between 45-65 degrees with many steelhead moving back into the lake as the Skamania strain (warmer blooded) of steelhead move in with small mouth bass. The Cattaraugus starts to clear up with more fishable days available.

June usually brings good fishing for large, aggressive smallmouth bass, with temperatures between 50-70 degrees.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My best day of fishing ever Alberto has the right stuff. He got me into the right clothing - who knew some waders have metal studs to grip slippery rocks? He lent me the right gear - I would not have carried tippet strong enough for smallmouth in pretty fast water. He took me to the right spots - I would not have fished the same portions of the stream, not covered it the way he showed. And taught me the right techniques, always calm, encouraging, and knowledgeable. If I had fished the same stream without him, I doubt I would have hooked more than a few, and I definitely wouldn't have netted any. In the end, after about a dozen, we lost track of how many we got. Thanks, Alberto!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Alberto Is THE GUIDE You Want for Steelhead! My 16-yo son and I were fortunate to spend 2 days in the water with Alberto during the spring 2021 steelhead run out of Erie near Buffalo. What an amazing experience and what an excellent person! Alberto was very communicative, which was comforting because we were coming from out of state. Alberto proactively emailed us before, during, and after the guided wades, advising us of weather and fishing conditions and the gear we'd need, sending us pictures after hours each day, and sending us a post-trip wrap up. Safety and comfort were paramount with Alberto. He had PPE for himself and for us, water, snacks, etc. Before our arrival, he'd spent time scouting the water and conferring with guide colleagues; so, when we met him each day, we spent minimal time getting to the fish and, thus, more time in the water catching fish. He took us into gorgeous water that was easy to wade in and to spot fish in – often with 1/3 of their dorsal surface above water! We both felt safe while wading and were able to concentrate on casting to fish and reeling them in. Alberto intuited that our home water techniques (small streams in VT and NH) needed to be tuned to his water and these fish; I appreciated the on-water instruction he gave both of us while we sight-casted to skittish fish. His skill in fly selection, knowledge of the water, and great desire to see us net fish all contributed to a top-tier experience on the water. I’d fish with him again in an instant!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good as it gets Alberto is among the very best guides I have ever had the pleasure to know. As an angler, he is as good as it gets. Knows every rock, every beat, every detail of his home water. If there are fish in the river, he will put you on them. His greatest gift may be his uncanny eye -- he can see the fish deep in the water and tell you exactly what to do to catch them -- and I suspect this has to do with his training as an artist. I also would not be surprised if he took a genetic test and found out there's a bit of steelhead in there. Plus he works *hard* -- on one day the fish were few and far between and he took me to three separate streams, late into the day, to get me a shot at a trophy. (Oh, and I just happened to land a 28 inch fish of a lifetime under his guidance on the 9th or 10th hour of my second day with him. Most guides would have had me back at the parking lot by then.) He is also an unusually gifted, patient, and generous teacher -- about how to fish and why, taking a clients' modest skills and making the most of them. He's a fount of knowledge about the flora and fauna in the area, if you are interested. And he's a remarkable human to spend a day or weekend with--a teacher, artist, world-traveler and deep thinker. Oh, and you'll get an incredible streamside lunch, better than anything you'd get even at a first rate restaurant.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Catching up and Catching fish Just spent 2 incredable mornings with Alberto in near 80 degree weather in early April in in Fredonia ,NY stalking steelhead . He put me on fish from the get go, seeing fish that where invisable to me. In addition to being and excelent guide, he is willing to impart his knowledge of fly fishing on to a novice like me. This was my second trip with Alberto and when it was over I was already planning my next. He makes it feel like you have known each other for years which makes for a very pleasent experience . I am greatful.
