Our Fly Shop:

Orvis endorsed since 1994, we have been proudly sharing our appreciation of the outdoors with both residents and visitors of Steamboat Springs in Northwest Colorado. With a strong foundation for customer service and a passion for sharing their knowledge of fly fishing, our friendly staff prides themselves on providing the best service and in depth local knowledge to both beginners and experts alike.

Our guide service offers walk and wade fishing trips on the Yampa, Elk, North Platte and Little Snake Rivers, and floats on the Colorado, North Platte and Yampa Rivers depending on the seasonal flows. It is our goal to help educate our customers in the sport of fly fishing, while sharing our love and enthusiasm for the sport.

Sample of a Typical Trip:

A typical day fishing with Steamboat Flyfisher starts out with our Orvis-endorsed guides picking up your party at your local accommodations or meeting at our shop in the heart of downtown Steamboat Springs. Most trips begin between 7 am and 8am during the summer months for both full day and half day trips. Upon your arrival at the shop, you will sign a liability waiver, order lunch (full day only), be fitted for waders and boots, and purchase a fishing license if needed.

After being transported to the river, the guide will provide the instruction needed to improve your fishing knowledge. Some common instruction includes casting, presentation, mending, how to fight fish, entomology of flies, proper rigging of equipment and tying knots. After fishing, your guide will take you back to the shop or your local accommodations.

Full day guided trips = 7 hours on the water with lunch.
Half day trips= 4 hours (lunch can be provided at an additional cost).

What Should Customers Bring?

Steamboat Flyfisher provides clients with all of the fishing gear necessary for a fly fishing trip. Included in our full and half day packages are: Orvis breathable waders and boots, Orvis 5wt or 6wt rods and reels outfitted with WF floating lines and all terminal tackle (leader, tippets, flies, etc). If you prefer to use your own gear, feel free to bring it and our guides will help with rigging.

Clients should bring a hat, sunglasses, sun block and a valid driver’s license to issue a fishing license if needed. A valid social security number is necessary to issue a fishing license in the State of Colorado.

Season:

Fortunately, we are able to guide year-round. Our float season generally runs from mid-May through mid-July, runoff dependent, but we are able to wade multiple rivers year round. Our favorite times are March, June-July, and again in October. Having said that, generally with all the options we offer, there is almost always somewhere that is fishing hot.

Species:

Due to the fact that we have so many options, we can target just about any trout species you typically see in the west, with the primary species being rainbows and browns. We also have a world class pike fishery, and we see some huge pike every year. Small mouth bass and grayling are also an option.

Region/Terrain:

We primarily fish the Yampa River, the Elk River, the North Platte and the Colorado. We also have permits to be able to take you into the countless high mountain creeks and streams.

Typical Weather:

Because we are at almost 7000’ elevation, the weather can be highly variable. But typically, in the summer, you can expect to be fishing in 70-80 degree weather.

Rates start at $375 for a one person, half day on public water. Give us a call at the shop, 970-879-6552, and we can discuss what trip is best for you and your group, at which point we can quote you a price.

How long are your trips?

Full day trips are 7 hours on the water and half day trips are 4 hours on the water. Those times do not include travel times which are typically less than 30 minutes from downtown Steamboat.

What rivers do you fish?

We fish the Yampa, Elk, Colorado and North Platte rivers. We also offer trips into the high country to fish some of the more secluded lakes and streams.

I have never fly-fished before, is this a problem?

We take beginners out every day and love doing it. No experience required!

What is provided?

We provide all the gear, and the guide will have water. Lunch is included from our wonderful deli on full day trips. The only things not included in the price that you will be responsible for is a fishing license for anyone over 16 and gratuity for the guide.

What to bring:

Weather appropriate clothing, a valid ID for your fishing license, and you must know your social security number (also for the fishing license). Suncreen and bug spray are always a good idea.
