The Story

Its always hard to answer why you're a better choice then another guide or outfitter. Fishing with other skilled anglers and guides has taught me to be open minded about new ways to reach people depending on their personality and fishing expectations. I think that strive for connection with people and making them feel part of the team is why folks fish with me. I am deeply passionate about fishing and I think that becomes contagious and obvious when people are in my presence on the river or a boat in the salt. With a passion for the sport and sharing the experience with others, I feel this sets me apart from the pack. Teaching casting and giving nature lessons is something I am equally enthusiastic about and I think people appreciate the added value especially if fishing is slow or were just taking a break from the action.

I chose the name Greasy Beaks after a fishing trip on the Deschutes in college. I heard someone in our group yell into the tent one morning "Hey boys get up! There's greasy beaks out there!" After the explanation, that greasy beaks was an expression for trout rising in a river and the foil of water they push off their snouts, the name stuck and I noticed you could say the same for a multitude of fish in different places. It's always a good omen that when you see greasy beaks on a flat morning the fishing is going to be good.

After my time at the University of Oregon and working for the Mckenzie Angler Fly Shop I spent four seasons guiding in Iliamna, AK. My time here was the catalyst to me becoming a full time fishing guide and one of the greatest experiences I could ever imagine. I knew that if I could take the daily grind for months on end and still want to go fishing at the end of the day (which I always did) I was ready to make this my career. I moved back east for the summer months to launch a salt water fly fishing company and guide service in 2011 so that is where I spend June - September. My Fall, Winter, and Spring are spent out on the Oregon Coast chasing Chinook & Steelhead.

Oregon is my favorite state and a place I've called home since my early twenties. My clients fly into PDX and drive out to the coast to fish with me. A typical meeting spot is either Lincoln City or the Tillamook area depending on which rivers give us the best fishing options. This is arguably one of the prettiest places in the world to chase fish with a fly rod and the native fish that frequent these systems are some of the most special.

Region/Terrain:

I am within an hour to most of the rivers I fish. A typical day is spent wearing waders and taking my Hyde Drift boat down one of the many coastal drainages. We use switch rods and strike indicators for nymphing in between swing runs. Skagit lines and spey rods are used for swinging flies to fish in larger areas. Depending on peoples preferences I am set up for whatever they like doing the most!

The wading can be challenging on certain rivers but for the most part its not bad and studs usually aren't needed. Felt souls and warm/dry clothes are recommended as conditions change frequently.

Typical Weather:

Typical winter conditions are 38 - 60 degrees with the possibility of rain.

What is Provided:

I provide everything you'll need! Feel free to bring your own, but my setups are dialed in and I use top of the line gear. I provide a lunch for my guests and have water and snacks on board. I am happy to clean and bag a hatchery catch that you might want to take home as well.

What to Bring:

Bring polarized glasses, waders & boots, as well as foul weather gear.

Gear Recommendations:

I like the Orvis Switch rods in 6-8wts with a switch nymphing line for steelhead. A spey rod in 6-9wt with a skagit head is key when swinging most of our rivers. For single hand rods I like a 10' 8wt with a nymphing line. We typically use 1" and bigger strike indicators and fish with a drag free drift presentation.

Additional Activities:

There are great hikes in our area on the north coast and birding can be especially good for birds of prey. Elk and deer roam freely through the coast range, so its not unusual to get some picture worthy footage before we even get to the river. In addition we also have a great in shore rock bass and ling cod fishery that can be a blast in between waves of anadromous fish.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great outdoorsman Took a steelhead trip with Eliot a few weeks ago and had a great time. It had been a awhile since hitting the river and needed to get back in my groove plus we were fishing Spey rods which was a first time for me. Eliot was patient and encouraging I was hooked on a steelhead on the Spey rod in the first while we were practicing in. The day only got better from there. Eliot’s love for the river and the fish in it really shines through along with his excitement of sharing it with his guests. Thanks for the wonderful trip hope we get to fish together again.
