The Story

We are a fly fishing guide service in East Tennessee specializing in trout and smallmouth bass located in the small city of Maryville, between Knoxville and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Fly Fishing is our passion and we enjoy sharing our knowledge and experience with others in order to make it their passion as well. We specialize in fly fishing, but will alter your trip to your liking. We practice catch and release so that others may enjoy the same experience. Whether you are a first time fly fisher or you are a seasoned veteran, you are always welcome with us.

Date Range

Fishing is open year around with no season set. With lots of options to choose from there's always water to catch trout or smallmouth around our area.

What is provided to customer

All gear is provided to customers at no additional costs.

Region/Terrain where you fish

East and Middle TN

Great Smoky Mountains National Park - Freestone streams with steep grades littered with large granite boulders. These trips are all wade fishing as streams are shallow and narrow with miles of pocket water loaded with wild trout which is easily accessible throughout the entire park.

Holston River, Clinch River and Caney Fork River - Cold clear tailwaters with heavy populations of Rainbow and Brown Trout with quality hatches offering great dry fly fishing at times and scenery to match. These trips are offered as float trips out of drift boats and rafts.

French Broad River, Holston River, Pigeon River, and Little River - These are some of the best Smallmouth Bass rivers in the country and just 30 minutes to 1 hour from our front door. With the exception of the little river most of our Smallmouth rivers are tailwaters which allows us to have a longer season to fish for them with very clear/shallow water with consistent water temps making the perfect combo for topwater action.

Typical Weather by Season

(Dec - March) - Cold mornings with moderate afternoons and mostly dry.

(April - May) - Cool mornings with very comfortable afternoons and occasional rain showers.

(June - August) - Comfortable mornings with warm afternoons and possibility of pop up thunderstorm.

(September - November) - Cool to comfortable mornings with very comfortable afternoons and mostly dry.

What Should Customers Bring?

Bring any personal gear that is desired, but always bring comfortable rain gear, dress proper for the occasion and always have protective eyewear.

Species You Fish for by Season

Summer is best for smallmouth bass. (topwater)

Fall is best for trout (nymphs and streamers) and late smallmouth bass. (subsurface)

Winter is best for trout. ( nymphs and streamers)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great guide. We went trout fishing on the Holston and he put us on them. Josh is very knowledgeable and willing to share his knowledge with us. I learned a lot and caught a lot of fish to boot. Great day on the water.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great guide and even greater person My wife and I booked our first ever fly fishing excursion with Josh Pfeiffer of Frontier Anglers. Josh’s knowledge of fishing and the Holston River allowed us to experience the challenge, excitement, and joy of fly fishing despite this being our first time. Josh knew the right spots ( I’m sure he had fisher finder sunglasses) and if we weren’t getting hits he was quick to try a new fly. Josh was a great teacher, patient, encouraging, and shared in the excitement of our landing a fish. Fishing with him was like fishing with your best friend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful Day w/Grandson on the Holston River “Flyfishing with your grandson is not about the fish—it’s about the time spent together catching them” And Spring is arguably the best time of year for fly fishing. The reason is that there are more insects hatching on the rivers and streams than any other time. Liam (age 13) and I went with ORVIS guide Josh Pfiefer, on the Holston River near Knoxville, Tennessee. Josh is the BEST! We had a wonderful day!! What a beautiful day and the fly fishing was even better. We caught twenty rainbows and one brown—-and Liam bested grandpa with a hefty 22 inch Rainbow. Life is GOOD.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Had a blast! We just finished our 3rd year fishing with Josh. He is an amazing guide, extremely patient, knowledgeable and he works extremely hard to help you have the best day possible! We spent a day trout fishing and then another day small mouth fishing. Josh's energy and passion around helping his clients is evident from the moment the day starts. We also spent a day with Gary Troutman as well and had a great time as well! If you are in East TN, you need to spend some time on the river with Josh...you won't regret it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Trip! We had a great trip! Whether you're just looking to get out for a day of fishing or are trying to learn the fundamentals, Josh is your man. We caught more fish than we could count, learned a ton about the sport, and had fun doing it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from First float trip Recently floated the Holston with Josh. He was very knowledgeable on the River and knew every hole/run to fish. My buddy and I caught Rainbow from the first run to the last. It was “one of those days” on the water. Josh is very helpful with tips and tricks to land fish with the fly rod. Josh is very personable and feels more like one of your fishing buddies vs a “disinterested” guide. He is first class and I will be taking more trips in the future with him. I highly recommend Josh and the experience.
