Hunt behind our world-class Brittanies or bring your own dogs. We have a guide for you, whether you choose ruffed grouse in the forests of Wisconsin or three species of quail in Arizona. Let Classic Bird Hunts provide wingshooting thrills—a brace of September Wisconsin woodcock followed by a covey of Arizona Mearns quail in January. These hunts are not for the faint of heart, as you will be walking miles in a day's hunt. However, heart-stopping memories will be your reward. In Northwest Wisconsin, you will be hunting relatively flat terrain mostly on trails through thickly-forested cover. Birds moved will be directly proportional to miles walked. These birds don't come easy. They will challenge your skill and stamina, making a bird in the bag ever so sweet. They don't call ruffed grouse "King of the Gamebirds" for no reason!

What is Provided:

Lunch and transportation from your lodging are included. If bringing your own dogs, you will need to follow in your vehicle. A variety of lodging options are available from a rustic mansion to a simple hotel room. Shells are provided at no cost. Quality double guns are available for your use at no charge—you are just responsible for any damages. Snacks and beverages are provided in the field.

Additional Activities:

Though we are not Orvis- Endorsed for fishing, we have been fishing local waters and Lake Superior for over 50 years. Many of our clients, especially on warmer days, choose to hunt the morning and fish the afternoon.

Duck hunting in season is also an option as a change of pace. Kayak down a local river or we can set you up with some decoys and a blind on local ponds and lakes.

Roughly, September 15 through November 15.

Ruffed grouse, woodcock.

Region/Terrain:

No lack of prime grouse/woodcock cover here, most within a half-hour drive from your lodging. Some hunts will take place literally out your back door. With over 200 proven covers and over one million acres to choose from, finding a solitary place to hunt is not a problem.

Typical Weather:

Temps can very widely. Highs near 70 F and lows in the 40s for September; highs near 60 and lows near freezing in October; highs near 50 and lows below freezing in November. That being said, we've had highs in the 40s in October and even reach 70 degrees occasionally in November.

Can I bring my dog?

We encourage guests to bring their own dogs and enjoy getting them on birds.

Do I have to clean any game?

Game cleaning and handling is provided by your guide.

Am I able to get online?

Wireless internet available at lodgings. Cell phone service can be spotty.

Where's the nearest airport?

Nearest commercial airports are DLH, a 70-minute drive, and MSP, a three-hour drive. Cable Union Airport for private planes is just 12 minutes from our headquarters.
